Am I the only one getting fatal crash when rendering separate wav's?

WinXP, Vegas 4 beta...

I've created an audio-only 5.1 mix and I would like to render it as 6 separate wav files (front left, front right, rear left, rear right, center, lfe). So I go to File, Render, and select the "separate mono wav files" option and hit "Save". This causes Vegas to immediately shut down and display the message "The instruction at 0x77f532bb referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be written", and then a total close down.

Is this a known issue, or am I the only one having this problem? I would be grateful if somebody else who reads this could please try it out and see if it causes the same problem?

Thanks in advance,
- Bjorn Lynne

I tried it and got 6 separate files. No errors, sorry.

Thanks for replying. Actually, when I saw your reply, I decided to try again with a very simple project, and that worked fine. I just created a new project, put two sounds in, no effects, no busses and only two tracks of audio. And I saved it out as 6 separate wav's without problems.

So I guess there must be another problem with both my "real" projects that causes this crash. These are 5.1 music mixes with about 20 audio tracks, some insert effects etc. When I listen to it, it sounds fine, but when I try to render it, Vegas4beta crashes, with the above mentioned error message.

I guess I'll have to try to strip things like effects, inserts, etc. out of my projects, one by one, and see if I can get find out if there is any one thing that makes the difference between crashing and not.

I'd still be interested to hear from anybody else who have had this problem or have any information on it.

Thanks,

After some more testing, I have found that Vegas4beta crashes out when trying to render a 5.1 project that also contains one or more stereo busses.

Why have a stereo buss in a 5.1 project?? To use them as aux/effect sends. I put a reverb on a stereo buss, use the track "send" to send some sound into that, and then route the sound from the stereo buss back into the surround mix. This is better than adding the reverb directly to the track, because this way I will only have 1 reverb engine running - not one for each of my 30 tracks!

So I think there is clearly a fatal bug there. If anybody from SOFO are reading this, could you please look into it or at least put it down as a fatal bug. Rendering a 5.1 project that contains one or more stereo busses causes a total program shutdown - with nothing rendered. :-(

Bjorn -
I've just reproduced the bug on my system. I expect something like this as been 'caught' and fixed, but I'm going to send an error report to SoFo anyway.

Yes, this is (was) a known bug in the Vegas 4 beta. It has been fixed.

Q: Why use an Sub bus for this when you can do the same thing with the Assingable FX? The assignable FX has the advantage of giving you an input gain (think of it as the master AUX send).

I am not familiar with "assignable fx". Could you give a very quick description on how to set one up and then use it as an "fx send" to send various amounts of reverb etc. from different tracks?

Thanks in advance,

tools audio insert assignable fx , then use the drop down pan menu on each track to access it.

Click the Add FX bus button in the mixer (or choose it from the Tools menu.)

This is intended to work just like and Aux Send /Return on a mixer. ( I know, it isn't mono capable.)---LOL!!!
