Subject:MIDI timing/recording issue, please help :)

Hi all. So I have my midi keyboard hooked up and a drum loop playing in Acid. There is a slight delay between hearing the sound on my keyboard to hearing it/having it recorded in Acid. Slight, but enough that the timing does not match the drum loop. Is there anyway to correct this mismatch of beats? Thanks.

that depends on the kind of sound card you have. what you're experiencing is called latency, and the rule goes that the bigger the latency, the bigger the delay between pressing the key on your midi keyboard and the sound coming out of your speakers.

so, in order to see if something can be done to your latency we'd need to know what kind of sound card you have, and which drivers you are running.

Ok, so when I checked the sound card stuff on my computer, it says: AC-Link 3D Game Audio with Legacy Audio Drivers, and the packing slip additionally says Integrated Sound Blaster compatible Audio. It's whatever came with my system. I have all the current drivers installed. So what can I do with the current setup or does someone recommend upgrading the audio card and if so, to what? Thanks!

with that sound card you're not going to solve your latency problem. getting a better soundcard is recommended. however, you need to be sure your computer can handle it.

there are several soundcards that will give you an acceptable latency (5 ms or lower). do a google search for Midiman Delta, Echo Gina, Creamware Pulsar, RME Hammerfall or Terratec. that should give you some links to product sites and reviews. as there is so much choice it's hard to say which card suits your needs best, so you do the research for yourself. :)

of course, a simpler solution would be to simply record your stuff using your current card and then manually move every midi event to the right position. but that can be cumbersome, especially in a midi-unfriendly environment like ACID's.

whatever you do, good luck. :)

Thanks a lot ATP! My current workaround involves speeding up those midi tracks until it somewhat matches the drum loops, but that's a crap shoot too. I'll look into those sound cards you suggested:)
