Acid had "step recording"...? or at least one could slow down to a crawl difficult passages in a "musical bed" for a song, and at some point, easily cinch it all together to sing with....? is Sonar better for that...?

You can step record via the List Editor. Look for the button in the lower left.

Got it...oh..since it's taking like a thousand years to get any answer from emagic...does MME or ASIO work better with sofo products..? even with sonar I was using my card, emagic's AW2, as MME..it looked like about the same latency when I switched back and forth btwn ASIO AudioWerk and Windows Classic Wave Driver, and I run my alesis w/serial midi into the back of my computer...I don't use the digital outs of my card at all...I don't think I'll ever be a candidate for WDM, especially for my insistence on using 98SE the rest of my life for reasons which I will not go into here...still confused over the MME vs ASIO thing...can anyone enlighten...?

ASIO has a slight edge in the latency department, but WDM (MME) is good too as long as you set the buffering to be about the same as you would get using ASIO.

If you have multiple audio devices and want to use them simultaneously (like sending multiple tracks to busses routed to different devices), you might be better off with WDM. Most ASIO drivers are device-specific and will only let you use one soundcard/audio interface at a time.
