Cakewalk is set to release Project5, a virtual studio that's an open system that can use a variety of plug-ins, drivers and file formats.

It'll have:

The PSYN analog polysynth which has four oscillators (hard sync, sub-oscillators and cross-modulation.)

The P5 drum sampler which has 18 "cells" which can have multiple layers that can be looped and filtered with seperate envelopes for pitch and amplitude. It has "bit-decimation" and can import wav, aiff and LM4 formats.

The P5 sampler has layering, on-board sample-editing, dual filters with envelope generators, pitch and amplitude generators the LFOs and various import options(AKAI S5000/S6000, SF2, Kurzweil, Wav and Aiff)

The Cyclone which has extensive editing capabilities where individual slices can be moved inside the loop, moved to other files, replaced, mixed, filtered, copied, etc. Its loops can triggered via a MIDI keyboard.

The effects include StudioVerb, compressor/gate, envelope/LFO filter, hi-freq exciter, true stereo delay, chorus/flanger, a graphic EQ and a parametric EQ. It will also accept DirectX and VST effects and DXi/VSTi soft synths.

Project5 will work with ASIO or WDM drivers, can import "acidized" loops. It has MIDI out and Rewire2.

No audio recording as Cakewalk feels the inclusion of Rewire2 can provide this functionality.

Sounds great but so did SONAR...we'll see. Thought you might be interested in the news.

Yeah, I got an e-mail blurb on this last week. Sounds like they're trying to co-opt Phatmatic Pro in terms of the beat/re-slice/instagrooving that's so popular in that app. Be real interesting to see how intuitive and fast the looping interface is. Cakewalk is not noted for its ergonomics or elegance of operation, so let's see if they raised the bar from Sonar here or not. At the least, it'll be stone tweaked for XP and all the latest drivers.
