Dilemna

I have been a user of SonicFoundry's product (SoundForge6&AcidPro in particular) but has been using Premiere6 for my video requirements. I'm quite familiar with Premiere's GUI but my biggest complain is that you always have to render before you could see the results of what you did (one example is the transition effects in photoslideshows). I still don't have the Premiere6.5 and is now choosing between it (Premiere6.5) and the Vegas3. Pricewise, I have to pay $149 for Premiere6.5 and $199 for VV3 upgrade by virtue of owning SoundForge6 which includes a VV3 LE version. Now, the question is...Does Vegas do the same, meaning do you have to render transition before so can preview it? Maybe it is wrong to ask it here, but please, give me your honest opinion about VV3 & premiere. BTW, I don't want to spend big bucks to get RT because this is only my hobby. Lastly, please, don't tell me to install the trial versions because I always hate to install something that may affect the harmony of my hardware and software. My system is a dual PIII-1GHZ VP6, 1GigRAM, 160GigRAID-0.

Do a search for "Premiere" in the Vegas-Video family. You'll find lots to read.

Short answer: you don't have to render to see the transitions in Vegas.

Long answer: the transitions probably won't run in real time unless you prerender. The faster your computer is, the faster the the framerate you'll get while previewing. Usually it's good enough so that you can tell what you're doing while you're editing. If you need to see what the finished transition will look like you can prerender just that section very quickly. If you have lots of RAM, you can do dynamic prerenders which are extremely fast. In any case, you can plop your cursor down on the timeline inside a transition and see what the final output will look like without any rendering at all.
