Subject:M-Audio Omni Studio Settings for Multitracking

Good morning listers. I've been beating my head with this particular dilemma for a couple of days now. How do I set up my Omni Studio(w/ Delta 66) to record audio from my keyboard and vocals from my mics simultaneously? The Omni Studio manuals are confusing the dogshit out of me!! I have my mics hooked up to the mic/instr jacks(on the front panel) and my keyboard's left and right outputs to the Omni's stereo aux ins 1 & 2 respectively! Is there a setting in the Delta control panel that i'm not setting correctly. What should those settings be in the "patchbay/router" window?
Can anyone tell me what their settings are if you're using Sonar 2(where you at Billy?) or Cool Edit Pro(version 1)?? It would be greatly appreciated!! If i can figure this one out, I will be ready to start charging folks for studio time!!!! Money, money, money!!!!!!!!

peace,
Antonio

Antonio,
If you are using ACID, you won't be able to record simultaneous audio tracks. It is not a true digital audio multi-tracker, like Vegas or SONAR. But when using Vegas or SONAR, with the OMNI I/O, I normally have it setup as follows:

OMNI Mixer Sound Sources
Mic/Line Input 1 (left channel) Microphone
Mic/Line Input 2 (right channel) Guitar
Line Input 3 (left channel) Line feed from L Alt 3/4(Mackie 1402-VZL Pro)
Line Input 4 (right channel) Line feed from R Alt 3/4(Mackie 1402-VZL Pro)
S/PDIF I/O from 2nd PC with S/PDIF I/O Korg OASYS PCI

In this configuration, I typically record a vocal & guitar from the front panel, while simultaneously recording anything else(add'l mics, guitars, synths, drums) off of my Mackie 1402 mixer, by switching the ALT 3/4 button on/off for the appropriate channel/s, that I want to record. In addition, I have my Korg OASYS available via S/PDIF also.

I believe your problem is, using the OMNI's stereo AUX ins 1 & 2 for your keyboards.
You need to use the 3 & 4 channel Line Inputs below those. When activating the AUX inputs from the back panel by pressing those two buttons above in, you coincidentally
de-activate the two front panel inputs. I accidentally did that one day, and nearly went nuts when my front panel inputs no longer worked. I would check that first.

HTH,

Okay. Thanks Billy Buck. I will use the line inputs below. Should I run my left channel out the keyboard into Line input 3 and my right channel into Line input 4 or should i run both the left and right channels out the keyboard into a stereo adapter plug and use only one of the Line inputs(#3)? Also, how do you have your settings set in the Delta's Control Panel??

I would keep the left and right channels separate and record them in stereo. I would not sum them to mono, unless that is what you want to do

Email me @ billybk1@bellsouth.net and I will send you snapshots of my Delta Patchbay/Router & Hardware settings tabs. It would be easier that way.
