to the sonic foundry staff.. i would like to thank you for creating some of the most excellent products this planet has ever seen. you will be missed.. but before you go off into the night please add rewire. this way your inspirational products will live on.... one more thing,im not a protools user but it seems that direct connect(digidesigns version of rewire 1) would also add a huge user base to your product. i realise that vstis are a great addition to new prospects but rewire and direct connect gets the attention of logic ,reason, cubase sx,sonar, and protools users.. producers and musicans that would never consider buying acid would reconsider and take notice if they could intergrate your products with there main software of choice. this is probably a big factor in the success of reason and abelton live please consider |

Hey, it's not a done deal that SoFo's gone. But if we keep talking like they are, they will be. |

I cannot wait until February (give or take a month?), just so this Goddamned hysteria dies the death it deserves. Iacobus |

February is around the time SoFo will announce what exactly is going to happen. (Read that in a business article about a couple weeks ago.) Right now, only the absolute higher-ups at SoFo know what will happen. Until then, it's all speculation by everyone else, including me. I refuse to take anyone's word for it until I hear it straight from the horse's mouth. What I do know as fact is that the programmers, etc. are basically in a mode right now that things are going forward, which means another version of ACID, Sound Forge, Vegas, etc., is being developed, as well as patching existing versions. (In other words, business as usual.) That could be a clue that SoFo's A/V products aren't going away. It would not surprise me if the A/V line (along with the programmers) was absorbed as part of another company, à la Steinberg (who is now under Pinnacle but is still functioning as Steinberg). Again, this is all just pure speculation and is not intended to be taken as fact. Iacobus |

Feb's when they announce the deal. Now it's interesting that right at the outset of all this, one investor possibly in the know stated flatly that the sacrificial lamb was to be the audio suite products. Then the coverup began and nothing more on that front. It does make sense, though--the new net-based media tools they've bought into show little promise investment-wise. The high profile of Vegas and Acid and Forge could raise some cash--though increasingly the story of selling off a portion of the business to save the rest is sounding more like a smokescreen for full liquidation. If I'm Twelve Tone or Steinberg or Digi--what do I get for SOFO's audio suite? How does this profit me exactly? Pinnacle is super aggro right now in lo-cost home editing, and Apple just announced a $300 FCP-lite and iMovie 3. Everybody's got some .wav+ tricks up their sleeve already. Who needs a half-finished, buggy product that loops and sort-of does midi and maybe a little audio? These guys at least believe they are way ahead of that story, plus they got Rewire. So the question is: what's SOFO's Must Have? What exactly is the Killer SOFO App for sale? We know the answer to that 18 months ago. But for Fall 2003, the picture is much cloudier. |

But for Fall 2003, the picture is much cloudier--- The buzz in the video side of things is Vegas 4...Thats right Vegas 4. Sofo's flagship product is where ALL the R&D money has gone[and is the reason why acid is sooo buggy]. Again its Vegas 4. Pinnacle buying steinberg IMHO is a move to compete with Vegas's superiority in the audio area...smart move on their part. Neither Pinnacle nor steinberg could compete with the "well roundness" of features that vegas has. If you don't believe me[which I'm sure at least ONE of you don't] then go to any video site like: http://www.dv.com/index_1.html http://www.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/select_forum.cgi?forum=sonicfoundry_vegas to see what I mean. That ofcourse isn't that comprehensive but you'll find plenty of links to forums where the buzz on vegas is huge. FCP/Pinnacle? Not if sofo plays their cards right. ---one investor possibly in the know stated flatly that the sacrificial lamb was to be the audio suite products---Or possibly had "NO" freakin clue as to what he ws saying and just "SHOUTED" whatever came over the top of his head and the media "ran with it"....Did you ever consider that? Again...Where did sofo get the funds to acquire anything?...the A/V line. Where did ALL the losses stem from in the report?...Each product that was acquired: ie:mediasite live, media taxi,USV...please post facts not opinions to prove me wrong. I'm taking mine from the conference call that stated that the A/V line was where sofo pretty much kept a "consistent" income with the "upgrades" plus "sales" of their A/V line. All the talks about media site live/USV/media taxi/etc...making them a huge profit in the near future is pure "guesstimation". So the question is: what's SOFO's Must Have? I think its obvious. Its sofo's forward thinking into the future of home movie editing:consumer/pro...The proof is here: http://www.sundancemediagroup.com/vegas.htm DVD Burners/digital cameras/etc are getting cheaper each day. We might not like the direction that sofo made but I think that it was the right choice to keep them afloat. Remember that cubase "has" rewire/hardware controller support/great midi editor/new look/vst/asio/VST plugin automtion/etc... and STILL got acquired by pinnacle ;) That [rewire]arguement does not hold water in the least. AND IMHO if sofo didn't spend all that money in the acquisition of "read above list" then we would have gotten ALL the features that we ALL asked for and there would be NO room to argue at all. We'll get rewire,etc...It's just that the audio side has been pushed to the side for a while now. Not that high in its priority list, but will stay there as long as we all stay civil and talk about what is needed. I don't see the A/V line going anywhere. It just doesn't make any sense. Ed. BTW...Pinnacle has a very poor rating when it comes to customer support and app stability. I've read in many places where EVERYONES opinion is that steinberg will hopefully better pinnacle's service and support through each others dealings with one another...NOT the other way around. That really sucks for steinberg because I feel that their customer service and support sucks as well ;) My .02cents. |
