why is infinity used to denote volume?

what does it mean

It's "negative" infinity dB ... meaning turned all the way down, ie. mute.

but why is infinity considered negitive...I thought "theoretically' it meant infinte

It is "negative" or "minus" infinity dB... not simply infinity ... there is a minus sign in front of it. Just like when you reduce the volume on a track it usually says something like -16dB or -24dB ... the dash is not there for asthetics ...
