Should I install this? I use ACID, SF, VV and Sonar. I read it has caused some problems, but there is a patch. What are the benefits?

Do you all back up your system prior to the update using the ASR backup utility? My FAT32 drive is limited to 4GB and my backup file is bigger than that.

I've had SP1 on my system for such a long time, I don't know if it's caused any problems that weren't there before. Seems stable to me, though. I'm set up for automatic updates (which gets just the critical updates) and go about once a week to check for non-essential updates.

I don't use System Restore at all. It eats up tons of drive space and makes my system sluggish. I use Norton Ghost, and I do usually make a ghost before I install anything new. I don't back up data, though, via Ghost. Audio files are just too big and I burn them to CD or DVD as I go along, as appropriate. I just back up the system itself and the core programs I use regularly in my ghost. I've got a 20-gig second hard drive that I use for this purpose (I usually keep the last two ghosts on this, plus some data), and periodically I also burn a particularly good ghost to CD. I use the split command to break the files into CD-sized chunks. You can back up directly to CDs if you configure yourself properly for that. But hard drives are cheap now.

I think you should get SP1. But it's a huge download, even with broadband, so plan to do it when you can devote some time to it.

The full XP SP1 is about 30MB, but if you do the web express version it may be less if you have already installed prior updates, I did and SP1 is now only 1.9MB because I installed a bunch of security and other updates. Now my add/remove programs lists 24 XP Hotfix (SP1) and even a SP2 that can be removed. Does your list all those or just the SP1?

thanks, L

from the win update site:

Windows XP Service Pack 1 (Express)*
Download size: 1.9 MB, < 1 minute
Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) provides the latest security, reliability, and performance updates to the Windows XP family of operating systems. Windows XP SP1 is designed to ensure Windows XP platform compatibility with newly released software and hardware, and includes updates to resolve issues discovered by customers or by Microsoft's internal testing team. The maximum download size is approximately 30 MB, however the size of the download and time required may be less for computers that have had updates previously installed. To minimize the download time needed for installation, setup will only download those files which are required to bring your computer up to date. Windows XP SP1 includes Internet Explorer 6 SP1. Anti-virus software programs may interfere with the installation of Windows XP SP1. Please disable anti-virus software while installing the service pack. Microsoft recommends installing SP1 because it includes many of updates to help keep your computer secure. Once you have installed the service pack you should check back for additional updates. One thing about uninstalling SP1: you are given an option when you install it whether or not you want to be able to uninstall it. They warn you that it will take a lot of memory to add the uninstall portion; I didn't do it on mine.
