Subject:Using my Yamaha Keyboard for recording to SoundForge 4.5

Hi their all,
This is Bob. What I am tring to do is record a drum sound that is on my Yamaha PSR 270 Portatone Keyboard, but when I press the record button and play that drum sound nothing happens. I don't think it is a problem in Sound Forge, because I can't even record the drum sound in the Windows XP sound recorder. (the basic sound recorder that comes with Windows) I made sure that I selected in the recording properties that "Wave Mix out" is selected, though just in case that wasn't the option I was suppose to select, I tried putting a check mark on "CD Player" and that didn't work, then tried putting a check mark on "Aux" an that didn't work, and I also tried putting a check mark on "Microphone" and that didn't work. Still no sound is being detected in SoundForge nor Windows XP Sound Recorder.

Though I can play sound from the computer to my keyboard, I just can't play sound from my keyboard to my computer. It seems to me that Windows XP is not even detecting any sound being sent from my keyboard to my computer.

My computer Aspects are as Follows:
Sony Viao 2.0 GHz with Windows XP Home Edition
Nivida TnT II Video Card
SoundMax Intergrated Digital Audio
512M DDRRAM

First question: How is the Yamaha keyboard hooked up? Is there just a MIDI cable connected, or is there, say, a cable or two connected to the line in on the soundcard?

If there's just a MIDI connection, Sound Forge cannot record MIDI. It records digital audio (a much different animal than MIDI).

sorry for not explaining that
2 things.
1. My keyboard is connected through a USB midi cable which answers why I can't record in Sound Forge.

2. Though shouldn't it work with the windows sound recorder? If not then is there a sound recorder that I can record with USB connection?

I believe Sound Recorder is digital audio only as well.

I tried taking a look at that model but couldn't exactly find it. I did find a PSR-260 and 262, which I imagine are related.

You could take the "phones/output" jack and output that to an external stereo (or boombox) using the right adapter. You could then output the stereo to your soundcard (via its line in) using a standard two RCA male to 1/8" stereo cable. You could then record in Sound Forge.

Hi there,
you quoted

I forget how I got to PSR 270 page, though I know it is in their but it is burried in their website. And yes the PSR 270 is almost exactly like the PSR 260 and 262. The difference for the most part is the 270 has Y.E.S. feature, which stands for Yamaha Educational Suite. For example you press a key once and it shows how to play its major chord, and you hit the same key again and it shows its minor chord.

Anywho, as I was browsing through this forum, someone had mention to someone else that a sequencer would do the trick which that person I belive wanted to record a Roland midi divice. He also recomended Cakewalk. I already downloded a trial version of it but didn't install it. Though is that the case, can I use Cakewalk to record midi, or was it specially requested to what the other guy wanted to do?

Thanks,
Bob
