Subject:acid.exe error immediately after splash screen

Wow, and ACID was running so well up till now :(
Now, whenever I attempt to open either ACID Pro 4.0b or ACID 3.0g I get an immediate
error message right after the splash screen appears:

Error Signature

App Name: acid.exe AppVer: 3.0.0.365 ModName: acid.exe
ModVer:3.0.0365 Offset 00106492

Exception Information:

Code: 0xc0000005 Flags: 0x00000000
Record: 0x0000000000000000 Address: 0x0000000000506492

This only happens when I try to open either ACID Pro 4.0b or ACID 3.0g
All of my other programs, SONAR 2.1, Vegas Video 3.0c, Sound Forge 5.0 open with no
problems. I tried uninstalling ACID 3.0g, and reinstalling ACID 4.0b to no avail.
Why would this start to happen all of a sudden, and only to the ACID programs?
I had just used ACID 4.0b yesterday and it opened fine. I have not installed anything since then.

Any help appreciated,

Billy Buck

Weird...sounds serious! What happens if you disable the splash screen? (General tab under Preferences, I think it was, in 4.0.) And I have the usual question: What did you just do to your system that might have caused some weird combustion to happen? Anything you can put your finger on? Or nothing? (I hope you don't say "nothing." Makes me nervous.)

Ahhh!....yes, I figured it out. It seems that ACID 3 & 4 needs to load the default,
Microsoft GS sound set(16bit), the gm.dls file in Windows/System32/Drivers folder, or they will not open. Yesterday, I moved that file out of the folder and replaced it with the recently introduced Genesys Genievoice GMDLS Acid DLS file. I even renamed it, gm.dls so it would be the new default DLS file that automatically loads into ACID 3/4. I did this because ACID would always default to this same DLS file, whenever opened and would not keep the new Genesys DLS as the default when I closed ACID. It got to be a pain to have to keep changing back to it each time I would load ACID. I guess I out smarted myself there :) Now the question for SF is, how can we permanantly change from the default lame Microsoft DLS file in ACID and still open ACID without an error incident?

You can't change the default DLS voices set. Simply renaming the Gensys DLS file to match that provided by Microsoft will cause ACID to crash.

A future version of ACID will permit you set a user defined default DLS file.

Thanks for the explanation Peter. Being able to save a user defined DLS file as a default would be of benefit to ACID 3|4 users.

Billy Buck, glad I read this this morning. You've saved me some grief, looks like, because I would have done the same thing.

I can't get it until January, but I'm curious to know what you think of the Geniesys DLS so far? Or have you been crashing too much to be able to tell yet? :)

Diane,
The new Geniesys DLS is a big improvement over the default Microsoft gm.dls.
You can immediately tell a difference when playing a MIDI file and comparing the two. The basses are deeper and fuller, the pianos sound more authentic, and for the current sale price of $14.95(half price), you really can't go wrong. I am glad I got it. Once I changed back the default gm.dls to the Microsoft default, all is good again. You just can't save any DLS file as a default in ACID, it will always revert back to the lame Microsoft one, so you have to manually change it everytime you open ACID. It's a PITA, but Peter Haller, did say, the ability to save a different DLS would be implemented in a future update.

It's so exciting to see development happening before our very eyes, and knowing that we're a part of it, isn't it? ;) If you hadn't wasted all that time pulling your hair out, Billy Buck, SoFo probably wouldn't even have thought about the importance of this issue.

Great news about Geniesys' DLS. Chomping at the bit.
