For some reason, when I record from a source like DVD or Laser Disk, I go into my line in on my sound card using a RCA Y splitter (left and right RCA to mini plug)but I only get the left channel. This happens with other sound capturing software also. I am using Soundforge 5 with Windows XP and Soundblaster PCI card. I have looked through my settings in my sound control panel and it looks right, but I notice when I look at the line in setting the slidder for left and right is greyed out like I am only getting one channel, which I am. Please help me

Is the 1/8" mini plug a stereo plug or a mono plug? It should have three distinct metal pieces at the end if it's stereo. If it's mono there will only be two metal sections, and the right channel will be shorted to ground.

Chien is correct, a mono mini-plug would give you only the left.
- Otherwise, check your soundcard settings. (double click volume control/yellow speaker icon, select: Options>Properties>Recording>Line make sure one of the line-in pan sliders did not get shifted to the left. (this happened to me once, and it took a few aggravating minutes to find it.
- Also re-check your SF settings: Options>Preferences>Wave>Record.
- Reverse the left/right RCAs. If you now get only the right channel, it's the cable.(Trouble shooting 101)

More trouble shooting 101 ... it could be a stereo plug not pushed in all the way.

Possibly, but that would also give you a nice hum noise also, because the shield/ground is probably not connected either. I would suspect the 1/8" mono plug being used.
