Subject:difficulty rendering midi tracks!

I recently had to reformat my pc, after installing Sonic Foundry 4.0. I found I could no longer render midi tracks to wav. Is there some kind of option I missed, or do i need to install a convertor or what? Previously I could put in a midi file and then render to a wav track. Now that i reinstalled Acid I can render wav files, but when i click on render it doesn't allow the rendering process for midi. I believe MIDI will only render when it's routed through something like a soft synth (e.g., a VSTi instrument). If a MIDI track is routed to an external device, it will not get rendered.
