I need your opinion and comments. I’m thinking of upgrading my OS from Windows 98SE to XP Pro. For those using XP with SoundForge 6.0, are there any serious problems between the two? Of those problems, if any, which are NON-patchable at this time? Basically, do you recommend making the switch? System information: -- Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1800+ 1.6 GHz -- Abit KG7 Raid Motherboard -- BIOS: Award Software 06/10/02 -- Memory: 512 MB -- Hard Drive: 80 Gig. -- Sound Card: Echo Mia -- Video: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 100/200 Ver. 4.0 Thanks in advance for your opinions and advice. I'm using Windows XP Home with Sound Forge 6.0 no problems. I used to use Windows 98SE too. I haven't looked back since. HTH, Iacobus |

Recently a SoFo tech posted on one of these forums that he wished everyone would move to XP. So in terms of SoFo apps and XP I think its pretty clear. ;-) drbam |

Hey thanks for the posts and comments! I ordered XP Pro today. I'm sure it will take a little personal tweaking and fine tuning to get it where I want it, but, overall, I'm looking forward to the installation. Wish me luck! Joe |

I'm using XPHome on a Sony Notebook, SF6. Be sure to disable Indexing service on your disc drives, I thought I had, but had not, and about 27 minutes into a live recording the SF record meters started behaving irregularly, and the resulting audio had gaps in it. The only way to stop indexing that I could find was to right click on each drive, and select properties, then uncheck indexing. Other sites have also recommended disabling System Restore Function (New to XP). Also be sure to use FAT32 on audio drives/partitions. After making those two changes, subsequent live recordings have been fine, recording 2 channel from Apogee Mini-Me via USB at 44.1KHz/24-bit. Regards, Rick Z |

I’ve been using XP for about six months now. 98 now ‘feels’ very primitive and unstable in comparison. Be sure to have a squiz at http://www.musicxp.net/ and tweak to your heart’s content. |

If you format your drives for FAT32, you will not be able to save files > 2GB. Not a big deal unless you deal in uncompressed video or want to store very large files (as .w64 or .pca) on a regular basis. There are other issues, but rather than elaborate, I just highly recommend NTFS for Win2K and WinXP systems. J. |

good luck with your XP installation. you made the right decision. XP is so much more stable than 9x, your audio apps will greatly benefit from it. i have used Sound Forge 6 and ACID 4 with XP Pro without any problems whatsoever. about FAT32 vs NTFS: while NTFS does work more efficiently with NT based operating systems (among them XP), it's not a necessity(sp?) to use that file system. i'm using FAT32 without problems at the moment, but i am going to convert to NTFS fairly soon. basically, if you want to use DOS or Win 9x alongside XP (for example to play old DOS games, or if you want to have a dual boot with 9x) you'll need to keep the file system at FAT32, otherwise there's no reason not to use NTFS. |
