Subject:using M-audio Duo With Acid 4.0/Multitrack Recording

Has anyone used the M-Audio Duo, a USB based pre-amp to record audio tracks to ACID. I am thinking about buying ACID 4.0 to record a few overdubs. I'm currently using ACID 3.0-basic. (It has some limits!) I would appreciate anyone's knowledge of this hardware and it's use with ACID. Thanks! |

I've got my USB Duo running great with ACID 4.0. The only thing? You can't monitor recording while playing back over USB, which I find strange since you should be at least able to playback while recording even at 16-bit/44.1 kHz over USB. If you plan to record via USB, you'll have to lay your tracks down first one by one before listening to them together. (You can monitor via the headphone out on the Duo in standalone mode; shut off standalone mode to listen to playback via USB.) A great way is to to interface the Duo in standalone mode and output it to another audio interface. I output the Duo's S/PDIF to my Audiophile 2496's S/PDIF in. (The Audiophile has to slave itself to the Duo's sample rate via S/PDIF.) I can then monitor recording while playing back. HTH, Iacobus |

Thanks for the response, Do you mean I can't listen to the existing ACID tracks while recording or I can't hear the instrument/mic that I'm recording? I figured I could only record one track at a time in ACID 4.0, but are you saying that using USB only allows me to monitor existing tracks by using the headphone jack? I'm confused. Any more help would be appreciated. |

I personally think it's a driver issue myself, but I'm not exactly sure. Theoretically, two uncompressed, PCM 24-bit/96 kHz stereo audio streams (one for playback, one for recording) would total around 9.0 Mbps. Full speed USB 1.1 has a max of 12 Mbps on one USB host controller. Am I crazy, or shouldn't full duplex work if the Duo (which is a full speed USB 1.1 device) had one USB host controller all to itself? Sounds like a question for M-Audio... Iacobus |
