Is anyone using the normalizer plug-in from Digitalfishphones with Acid 4.0b? I copied the file into my plug-ins folder but either Acid can't find it or I can't. Where should I be looking? I'm still having trouble with playing back projects - the sound stutters. Could this plug-in help me?

Thanks

I'm not familiar with that certain plugin, but I don't think it (or any plugin) could fix playback stutters. Any stutters I get are usually from pushing my system resources to the limit. Try muting tracks that aren't essential to the section of the project you are working on. This always works for me. Also watch the effects you use, some will majorly eat up CPU.

By the way, does it just "normalize" a track as in setting a max volume, or is it something different? I haven't taken a look at the digitalfishphones' plugins, but they seem to get a decent rep on most sites.

it's a vst plugin, so you'll need a wrapper to use it.

Thanks for the replies. What is a wrapper, where do I get one and how do I use it. I'm very new to all this VST/plug-in stuff.

I think Acid has problems with memory. Certainly Acid 4 consumes double the system resources for playing a basic 7-8 track project (with no effects) compared with Acid 2. I have 1 GB of Ram and system resources shouldn't be a problem. The project will be using about 20% of my resources but suddenly this will shoot up to 100%. This doesn't happen when there is an event on a track using an effect - it seems to be more duration based - the song falls over after around 90 seconds to 2 minutes of playback time. If I stop and start playback I can get through a whole song.

I don't know much about the denormaliser plug-in but I want to try it. Here's a quote from the readme file:

"This plugin does nothing fancy except just injecting some noise into the plugin chain.
You might need some additional noise if you encounter CPU spikes or serious performance problems whenever there is no incoming audio feeding an active plugin.
This may occur with certain plugins that don't come with proper methods to cancel the so-called 'denormals'.
This is an issue with some audio hosts that don't switch off the plugin's audio path when the song is stopped. Additionally, denormalistaion can also occur whenever a track contains pure silence."

I don't know what CPU spikes are but if I have them I want to get rid of them!

Cheers,

Chris

A Wrapper or VST/DX adapter is a utility tool, that simply put, converts VST into DX, of course it's much more complicated than that but in essence that's what it does. The first two in my opinion are the best.

You may also want to check into getting DX Man, it's a handy little utility. Go here read about it they can explain far better than me.

Thanks Raskeita and Coolout. I have a wrapper and I got the denormaliser going - unfortunately so far it has helped me with my problem. I was wrong about the time though. Acid will play for about 2 and a half minutes before cracking up.

Does anyone have any Application specific suggestions to avoid stutter and sound breakup on playback? I've checked my drivers and defragmented the drives and all that.

Thanks,

Chris
