why do I need an encoder when i can add aiff or wave to my dvds already?

is it for surround only?

so is the workflow:

render from acid with surround set up

take the several files from the render

encode to onw ac3 file

add to dvd authoring app

is this just for burning audio dvds

Im confused about the workflow

Surround is a huge part of it. This is easily the most cost effective way to encode a 5.1 ac3 file in the market today. If you want digital surround sound on your DVD's, this encoder makes a lot of sense.

Why ac3 over wave (pcm)? Because ac3 is compressed without suffering much loss in fidelity. You can get a lot more audio on one disc with ac3 than pcm. This yields to longer videos on one disc.
