Subject:Line in not picking up audio

I have three jacks on my laptop - one for the speakers, one for a mic, and I assume the third is for line in. But when I try to record from my mini disc into sound forge, it does not pick up any audio and the record meeters just hover around 72 db. I have tried adjust the Sounds controls, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem could be? Is it possible the third jack is not a line in but rather something else (what else?)?

You may need to unmute the line in with the mixer applet (little speaker in the Systray).

Also keep in mind that there are separate volume controls for monitoring (playback) and recording. When you bring up the mixer control panel for the sound card, click on Options / Properties / Recording to choose the recording input. Most likely this defaults to microphone. Select Line input instead. You'll also have to select Line input on the Playback screen if you want to hear the input before clicking the Record button.
