Canopus ADVC-100

Has anyone used the Canopus ADVC-100 Analog to Digital Video Converter to transfer analog "S" video from a Sony Betacam 1800 into Vegas? I'm trying to find a low-cost, high-quality way to get analog Betacam SP into firewire format for use in Vegas. The Canopus costs around $300.00 and doesn't have any software control over the VCR, but I'm just interested in conversion quality. How does the conversion look? Anyone have any idea? Any other conversion boxes which offer high quality without breaking the bank?

Thanks.

I'm using a tvOne DV-2001 that I bought from dvdirect.com for $225. So far it works great.

The ADVC-100 looks great, plus it uses "locked audio" so there are no audio drift issues on long captures. I recommend it highly.

The ADVC-100 is without a doubt the best AD/DA converter in its price range. I have one and can only rave about the results I get from it. A friend of mine has the Dazzle bridge and is happy with the quality of the video but has several audio issues, mainly sync issues when importing long clips. -Shon

Happy with the video quality of the DAzzle Bridge? Ouch! Worse than the MSDV codec, it's 601s video chip is horrid, about the same as the Cineon codec.
The Canopus isn't spot-on if you use a WFM on it, but it's pretty great. It's got a little bump at the top end. However, for sub 1000.00 it can't be beat. yet. With the new 701 format chips available in January, you can be sure there will be loads of great converters out there for sub 500.00

Yeah, that's what he said anyway, I myself have never seen results from the Dazzle but you say they're worse than the Microsoft codec? wow! that would be pretty bad! -Shon

Vegas won't lose sync even with unlocked audio, although since the ADVC-100 uses locked audio, it's not a problem.

We've had much better luck with the ADVC-100 and the (discontinuted) Sony DVMC-DA2 boxes, but less luck with the Dazzle.
