Subject:Record Levels Increase Automatically

I was trying to record from a mini disc into sound forge using my sound card. When I get set to record and check the volume levels (not sure if thats the right term, but I am referring to those db levels that show up), the levels start low, and then start to increase until they clip. This is before I have even recorded, and then if I do record, I get this low screeching noise in the background. I tried just attaching a mic, and had the same problem. I know this works since I have done this before with a tape and also recorder straight from the mic, but for some reason now I am getting this odd problem. The only thing I can think of that I have changed recently is that I partitioned my hard drive to keep my audio files separate.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

thanks

You are getting feedback. Which means the sound coming into your PC is being played back out, and then entering back into the input somehow. Check your Windows soundmapper mixer and makesure that "Stereo Mix" is unchecked in the record section, or that the "record what you hear" is not active, or some direct input monitoring is not enabled on your sound card mixer. To simplify things....just goto the windows mixer and mute every input to record from except the "Line IN".

Rednroll - I tried that but had the same problem. I actually tried re-installing my old Sound Forge 4.5, and when I use that, I don't get the problem. The noise level stays right around 72.2. Any other ideas?
