i'M GETTING A VERY FRUSTRATING PROBLEM ON 4.0a Its ridiculous. When I'm recording vocals and then do my retakes its fine until I get to 85/640 on my memory usage at the bottom of my screen. It freezes up and just stays stuck and then any good takes I did have are lost when I have to restart the program.
This doesn't make any sense when I have more than enough memory, I have my other programs shut down all except acid. I have windows XP pro, 750 p3, Audigy, 7200rpm 20GB HD, and 640MB of RAM....I don't see why I'm having so many problems with this program, I want to throw my computer out my window and let it get hit by a semi.....ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!

What can I do to rectify this irritating problem.....I should have just stuck with 2.0!!!!

Hey there,

I thought it was just me having this problem. I called support and they were baffled as well. You're setup is even quite different than mine, so I no longer feel that it's my system configuration. When you say that "it freezes" do you mean that the program itself locks up? Here's what happens to me, see if you can relate:

I'll hit the "stop" button after I've recorded a track and the "building peaks" down at the bottom left will just hang. I have to use the Task Manager to force Acid to shut down. The takes are not lost, however. I can still locate them in the directory I've recorded in. The tracks just don't get saved with the project because of the forced shut down. Also, sometimes Acid just crashes and closes itself. Then, when I open the Task Manager, there it is still running in the background and sucking up all the memory. I try to kill it, but it won't let me. If I just let it continue to run in the background it will shut down my entire system within 5 to 10 minutes.

I've got an Athlon 1500XP, 512 megs of ram, 18 gig Cheetah Ultra SCSI II hard drive and 128 gig UDMA 7200 hard drive for samples and audio archiving. Midiman Midisport and MAudio Delta 66.

I'm frustrated too. Perhapse enough people will surface with these same issues so you and I don't think we're nutz.

The way you explained it is the EXACT same way it happens to me!! Man, it is very irritating. You and I are having the exact same problem, I hope there is some solution for this. It seems that our two different set-ups only indicates that there is a BUG in the software. Hopefully SF will be able to help us out.

Hey guys,

midi: we definitely don't think you're nuts :)

I am really struggling to find a common thread between your setups... midihead, are you runinng XP as well? XP itself isn't going to be the problem. I think a large chunk of our users (including myself) are using XP at this time.

Are both of your seeing a steady rise in RAM usage as you record? How long are the segments you are recording? Are they appearing as loops or beatmapped tracks (the recordings that work fine, that is)?

Does it make a difference if you change the drive that you are recording to? Try recording to C:\temp a few times and see if that makes a difference.

Also, do you know what brand/model of motherboards you are each using? Perhaps this could be a chipset or IDE controller issue. If you don't know the actual brand/model of the board, please post the brand/model of the computer itself (if it's prefab).

Let's see if we can narrow this down,

Thanks for the kind reply! I just sent Jeff F. my latest CD single...got Sonic Foundry logos plastered on the inside. Anyway, I built this thing so I should know what's in it...here goes:

Hardware:
MSI K266 ProII RU with VIA K266A chipset
I've got 3 hard drives, 1 contains the OS/programs, 1 contains my sample library (both of these are IDE 7200 RPM), and the last drive is the one I record on. It's a Cheetah Ultra SCSI II 10,000 RPM drive. I think that I mentioned in my last post what all the rest of the gutz were, except the video card which is a Hercules built NVIDIA G Force II card.

I'm running XP Pro SP2 with all the latest patches and drivers for everything including the VIA 4 in 1 drivers and Detonator and M.Audio drivers.

I've killed anti-virus software in the background as well as anything that is not needed. I DO have Zone Alarm Pro running at all times since I'm one of those idiots that uses his PC for email and Internet too.

Does this info help?

Oh, one more thing...sometimes when I render audio in 24bit 44.1 Khz I'll get a small snippet of something that resembles pink noise, dropped right in the middle of my track. It's in a different spot most of the time and happens 1 out of 10 times that I render. Freaky.

Man, I wish I could just add to one of my previous posts...or better yet, remember to add stuff that I'd forgotten.

This is an answer to your question Nate, about the memory pull gradually growing in Win XP. My answer is yes. I do see this phenomenon. When I open up a project that I've saved (for instance, the last one consisted of 34 tracks) the task manager reads my memory usage as about 11,000. After working with it for a while (and this is with no DSP's, mind you) I notice that this number does increase. When the "building peaks" lockup happens, it's using around 116,000 according to the Task Manager.

WOW!

Midihead really knows his stuff!!
OK, lets see, my good recordings are bitmapped when they appear on acid.
My RAM Usage does steadily climb when I am recording.
But what is with the 85 MB thresh-hold...thats where it ALWAYS hangs and "Builds Peaks". (sorry, I know I'm repeating myself)
My motherboard is...I don't really know, I think it is the same manufacturer as Midihead, but I forgot (and I'm the one that put together my computer...ouch) :-/
Is there a way for me to see who manufact. my motherboard through windows or do I have to open up my case and look physically at it to find out?

Same for me. I'm using XP on an EPOX 8K7a+ mobo. The lockup occurs only after recording several tracks (about 2-3 mins length).

If I have a dell does that mean its a dell motherboard? or could it be junk
