Subject:Cleaning Up Cassette Recordings Posted by: Phenam Date:12/10/2002 12:39:02 PM Does anyone have any tips on cleaning these recordings? The problem I have with this one particular file is the fading in and out effect. Are there any tricks to even it out so it doesn't fade back and fourth?

In dealing with old reel to reel and cassette tapes I have found that improper storage of the tapes (heat or prolonged storage after high speed rewind) can deform the media. This prevents the tape from making continual accurate contact with the playback head and thus the"fading in and out effect". I have resorted to various home made guides and pressure pads to keep the tape runing smoothly. If the tape was deformed before the recording was made, then the problem is (obviously) far worse as a proper signal never made it to the tape. So, if you have reason to believe that the problem was introduced after the recording was made, do every thing you can to get the best signal possible off of the tape. That will go a lot further to getting acceptable results than all of SF's wonderful tools. As Red says: "Garbage in, Garbage out" Oh, yeah - If these are old tapes clean the tape heads frequently. If I'm dealing with very old reel to reel tapes, I clean the heads, capstan and guides every few minutes. I am a bit of a fanatic on this point, I know, but it's an easy thing to do and it will help you get the best out of the source. ..spalding
