You could just reduce the vocal part in somes cases, but nothing more. Some other sounds are likely to disappear also, especially the monophonic parts like bass.

Anyway, best results are given by special tools such as Karaoke softwares (DART, for example).

In some rare cases, it's possible to remove almost all the voice, but it depends on the source sound. I could do that with some songs on the latest Jewel's album, where the guitar is wide-stereo and the voice at the center with no reverb.

One thing is sure: vocal removal will NEVER create a good quality playback. It can be useful for rehearsals, but not for a final mix.

Heh, this. "remove vocals" is something we'd all be able to do if we were god. I have a free program called Goldwave (guess the url now) that has a remove vocals "effect" it can work well on some sounds but the output quality is shit and usually it takes out other instruments and never takes out ALL of the voice! Basically it cancels the mono channel (what both speakers do) so it keeps the stereo thing. Generally works best on metal and alternative rock.

While I am a strong believer that this can't be done well, I was recently playing with the software that the Audigy ships with. In the EAX stuff there is a tool that will cancel out vocals. I was actually very surpised how well it worked. Not perfect and it is dependent on the material, but it could be something to play around with and work for certain source material.
