Subject:CD extraction that works on only 1 of 2 workstations

Hello, all. Let me try to explain this -

I just received an audio CD of dialogue from another studio for editing. Our studio has 2 workstations, both with Sound Forge 5.0f. The CD plays in a normal cd player fine - it has 4 tracks that are all audible. When I tried to extract the entire CD into Sound Forge for editing (creating regions), it created all 4 regions, but tracks 3 and 4 were blank. (???!!!)

Just for giggles, I tried the same thing on our second workstation, and it worked fine. Can anyone explain this? The sucessfull workstation has SCSI drives, while the other one doesn't. Does that have anything to do with it? The CD was from a ProTools session, by the way.

Can anyone enlighten me as to why the extraction worked on 1 computer and not the other? Thanks.

My initial guess would be the differences in CDrom drives between the two systems. The one that extracted the blank data, might not have a robust enough reading mechanism or error correction within the drive. So if there are excessive scratches or just a high amount of errors from the intial burn of the CD from Protools, then the CDrom will give you the blank data windows, because it can't get enough correct data to reconstruct the audio from the CD. Not ALL CD mechanisms are created equal. So what might playback fine in 1 CD player, may not play at all, in another. This is especially true with older CD players or CDroms. Try slowing down the READ/EXTRACTION "Speed" in sound forge and see if you are successful. Otherwise, you might have to buy a new CDrom. Plextor, is probably you're best option and I have also had pretty good success with Cdroms made by Toshiba. Mitsumi and Hewlett Packard, and your basic run of the mill CDroms are not so good for error free audio extraction.
