From ACID's online help concerning extracting from CD:

"Click Play to preview your selection. In order to preview, your CD drive's audio output must be connected to your sound card, or you can connect headphones to the front of the CD drive."

I'll bet you anything that Acid only previews CD audio in analog mode. Originally, all CD rom drives connected with sound cards through analog connections. The audio on this was often lessor in quality than a "real" stand alone CD player. After a while, applications started appearing that would extract the audio data digitally from the data output of the CD rom. Over time, Microsoft added that as an option to their media player, and now most people just use this "digital" mode. Often now on computers, the analog connections aren't even there or connected anymore. This is rarely a problem as it is hard to find a program now that uses the analog CD mode. If Acid only used this mode, it would behave exactly as you described.

That's right Laurence & good info...!
You will definitely need those silly little cables connected to a sound card.
You won't need the cable connected to preview loops off of the loop CD's.

Hmmmm....wave file vs. CDA track previewing. Maybe like Laurence pointed out about "older" units/PC's, SoFo is ensuring compatibility for older ROM drives and sound cards......or maybe using the cable helps to conserve CPU useage/bandwidth??
SoFo once stated in the VV forum, that the reason a New Project's Audio Properties is at 44.1KHz by default is because there are still some sound cards in use that can only process 44.1.
