Yup, today is the day. By my calendar anyway. Most companies are closed Thurs and Fri. It doesn't get any later in the month!

It should come when it's ready and not a moment before. Wasn't that the problem with AcidPro4 in the first place ?

They are selling surround for a program that doesn't support it yet. Hmmm. Cd art release? Hmmm. Nah, enough waiting. Release it now. I'm sure 4.0c will be right around the corner anyway.

Well...as much as I would like to see it today...I would rather SF make good on their intended silent on this mystery release and have it really rock out of the gate.

Stability over schedule anyday. As I have said before...SF - please take your time, okay? The wait will be worth it.

Don’t hold your breath my friend. Sure, it would be nice to have SF release “b”, but imagine your mood if all those expected fixes were only half baked? Deadlines are one of the biggest problems the software industry has (other than piracy). Some suit decides on a release date and the programmers are not always able to live up to it. They’re only human after all. Imagine just how many configurations have to be tested and have corrections made so to be compatible with the widest range of user equipment. Mind boggling. Think about the mound of shit that will come SF’s way if “b” doesn’t fix a majority of the problems. Much more than if they just don’t release on a predicted day. Hopefully soon, but not until its ready…ready for real. Wouldn’t it be nice if a “c” wasn’t necessary?

Most of the releases I use by SF go to g or h. That's nice. Typical among the ever churning software machine I guess.

I'm waiting for the AC3 encoder. The only reason why I purchased ACID 4 was so that I could spend more money and buy the encoder. First it was "early November", now its still "late November", well it aint November anymore.

I've been in software development for 17 years. When I hear apparent customers saying things like "I'd rather it be late than wrong", I get quite agitated. Making excuses for software companies is absurd. Organizations that have their act together don't promise what they cannot deliver. Yes, marketing is often ahead of development. Developers are always being pushed to get the next thing done faster than they think it should take. But if you have a good dev team, they will know how long it really will take and push back the marketing folks when they have to. Back in October, SF made a press release and they posted the information on their web site about release dates. Solid organizations just don't do things like this unless they know that they will deliver. The development team knows how long it’s going to take them to get a product that is ready for market. (This is not the first time they have developed a 5.1 encoder.) Dev teams are also quite used to working 20+% overtime when running behind their deadlines. And in this economy with the IT job market in its present shape, I can't imagine that the software is not ready. I can only imagine that there is some sort of licensing issue with Dolby or some other legal problem which is preventing SF from going to market with the encoder. But if it is the dev team, then need to start firing people because there are lots of hungry developers out there who would be happy to do what it takes to get the product to market.

dvdmike,

The biggest problem with SF was making that Acid 4.0 announcement and it's related products WAYYYYYY too early. I mean - look at the shitstorm that was generated. Acid 4.0 has never worked right from day 1.

The SF marketing department also needs a serious clean out. There is no better way to wreck your reputation as a software vendor than to rush things out that do not work just to make some cheesy deadline.

I hope that the developers do push back and really work this thing over so we have a product that can actually be used.

And you know what's really funny - all through these last few months, I have stayed with Acid 3.0g and made more good solid music with Acid than I can remember. Just want to say that in these times of infinite waiting for what hopefully will be a stable 4.0b - take some time to get reacquainted with an old friend - Acid 3.0g. Stable and very usable for all kinds of things.

I'm kind of chortling right now over your comments, Cuzin B. Not because they're wrong...but because Big-Daddy Microsoft long ago set the precedent for this kind of thing--and not as a marketing/dev goof; as a STRATEGY. When the gooey Microsoft Word came out, there were a number of advanced features on the pull-downs that they were selling hard as better than what their nemesis, WordPerfect, had to offer--WordPerfect's dead. Long live WordPerfect--and they were not even programmed yet! Click on the feature and nothing happened...because the code wasn't even there! But the investments in the product were.

Off the subject, but I'm just tickled pink this week to see that a neat new free VSTi that a friend of mine programmed for me in SynthEdit, Ultradia SE, works like a charm in Acid. It's different from any VSTi you've ever used before. Go get it: http://www.ultradia.org (VSTi link toward bottom of the page). Fun and free! Thank you, Hockinfinger!

Well, that's what we're hoping. But it's true that it usually takes a while for updates to iron out all the bugs. I'll be happy if 4.0b eliminates some of the problems discussed on the forum and they keep working on improving Acid over time.

Joel, I goofed! I put in a request for a password-protected directory so the programmer could upload updates without having to go through me. So of course nobody else can get in that directory! (What was I thinking....)

I'm as we speak moving the files into a non-protected directory and revising the download links. Please try again in a bit: http://www.ultradia.org, but be sure to refresh your screen.

I don't THINK it was me...this is the first news I've heard of it, if so. But there's a lot of very interesting work being done in the DNA music realm. I'm the only one I know of who's combining DNA work with ultradian rhythm entrainment--cool in its own right.

Anyway, I know this is all WAY off topic to 4.0b! :) So back to waiting patiently.

It goes without saying that we all want the software released without bugs. But all software has bugs. There is a line, and it moves often, of how many known bugs are acceptable with a given release. I do not want SF to release software before its ready if its too buggy. Statements such as the one I read where we (the consumers) "pushed them too hard" are incredibly rediculous. We did not put a gun to anyone's head and say "finish this realse by X date or else". the only reason why I purchased Acid was so that I could encode dolby digital 5.1 audio. I purchased it in advance of the release so that I could learn the program trusting that Sf would be good on their promise of releasing the software in "Early November". I should not be blamed for listening to SF and spending money sooner than I needed to, should I? Most software companies keep their new software releases secret until right before its released for several reasons, not the least of which is so they don't get too much egg on their faces if they deliver late. To have a product announced in October that was supposed to be out to market by early Novenber and for it to be now early December and the product is not yet released and the manufacurer is using nebulous words like "real soon" is pretty bad. I do have to admit that I am seeing this trend of more bugs and late fixes occur with more frequency and I probably cannot say that Sf is much different than most software vendors out there today.

Lets see a date posted SF and lets see it met please.

dvdmike,

I so disagree with you. As soon as you post a date, all hell is going to break loose. Especialy if there is a glaring error found early. Everyone will blow their stack saying the thing should have been tested further. Don't get me wrong - I agree with your statements on bugs in every app and the "acceptable" limit of defects that exist in all apps. However, in 4.0 and 4,0a, the bug count was way beyond acceptable.

I can appreciate your use of Acid for Dolby decoding but for the majority of us in here - 4.0 has been a joke, plain and simple. SF would have been doing themselves a real favor by making this 4.0b release, the initial offering however someone over there (SPELLED MARKETING) had an ad deadline or something to make. What SF made by rushing out that bug ridden 4.0 initial release was a whole pile of bad vibes with a fairly happy user base.

So once again - SF - please do NOT post a date and get everyone riled up. Keep working at 4.0b and release when ready.

Cruzin, I think that we agree more than we disagree. Shrinkwrap software houses should not be communicating dates until the product is close enough to market that you will know the date will be met. And they should not be releasing software riddled with bugs ever. Unfortunately, they released the product and dates for enhancements way before they could deliver, so now everyone is already upset.

What we apparently disagree on is the notion that a software business, or any business for that matter, can be run properly without deadlines, commitments, and accountability. I could not imagine telling my customers how much my service will cost, what to expect from my service, but not when it will be delivered. I'd never get any business. And when I don't deliver on time, since my business is marketed by word of mouth, I loose future customers. In order for an organization to succeed, there has to be accountability. In my previous business, I was in charge of a $2,0000,000 software project a couple of years ago where I committed to a 9-month complete dev cycle. I finished in 10 months. I was late mostly due to the fact that new legislation was passed which had to be programmed for and had to go ahead of my project in priority. The marketing people had committed to some large customers the date that I said that I would deliver and since, in part, we were late delivering, they left us as customers. If we had never communicated a date to these customers, they would have left sooner. Since I was late, my bonus got slashed that year and I was held accountable in that manner. Now I am more careful to expect the unexpected.

Proper software testing should find 99% of the bugs prior to shipment and these bugs are usually easy to fix by developers once identified as repeatable events. A mature development organization will have the proper testing tools and environments to catch the bugs and thus be able to have a predictable development cycle and timeline so that dates can be communicated accurately internally within the organization. Unfortunately, software houses today in the zeal to cut costs and get to market quicker than the other guy know that they can use their early adopting paying customers as their augmented QC staff free of charge. This is rapidly becoming the norm since the paying customers have short memories once the bugs are fixed and most will purchase the next upgrade in the same manner. The only way to stop the behavior is for the masses to demand their money back for their paid bug plagued software and not to purchase from the same company again. Until consumer behavior changes, I'm afraid that the trend of dot zero releases will continue to be riddled with bugs.

dvdmike,

Good commentary. And I am not disagreeing with you one bit. SF has paid the price for their zeal. Their stock price is at an all-time low and their financial woes have been well documented. That being said - I like the company and I like their product line most of the time. However, it is quite obvious that SF is run by the suits in sales and marketing (Q - How many glossy catalogs have you received since summer?) with the developers coding as fast as they can to fill in the gaps. This is the classic vicious circle in software - Build hype, release way too early to make a trade show deadline (as was the case for Acid 4.0) and then watch early believers send money so we have time and resource to really work the app to stabilize it. Sorry, but I didn't bite this time. Neither did a lot of others.

What SF needs to do is recognize that the USERS pay the bills by continuing to support the product. If SF can really deliver with 4.0b, I will be scrambling for my wallet. If it is another piece of crap that forces me to change drivers and change this and alter that...then the wallet goes away and I give up.

Finally - there is a fine line when there will not be enough cash coming in the door to make ends meet. I personally believe that SF is very close to this line and we all know what happens if the well runs dry. SF can however, turn this around quickly by getting users excited in a positive manner by letting the PRODUCT do the talking (instead of the freakin marketing department) with a truly ready release.

In my world - a solid product needs no marketing or release dates to meet - if it works - as advertised with very little trouble - I will buy it everytime. Also - I can wait for months if it means I won't be screwing around all day trying to get things working instead of delivering value to my clients with these products.

SF was once like this...maybe they can get back on track starting with this update.

I just recieved my new Winter 2002 SF product catalog in the mail today. The 5.1 plugin is listed, and it looks like it's ready for purchasing. Doesn't say: "Coming Soon"....Of course, the small print reminds us that AP4 ver. "B" is required.

So, maybe 4.0b today!? Maybe they are going to skip "b" and just release "c" in the first quater of 2k3.....with Vegas 4.

Well, if you did have a way of sending out update emails (perhaps as something registered users could sign up for, specific to the product they've bought), then maybe you could send them out in staggered batches, either randomly or in alphabetical order. It might give you some control over the mad download rush!

first of all let me say it's great that SOFO employees actually read and respond to the forums. it's good to know we're not alone.

i'm curious...if all you guys (SOFO) are waiting for dolby to approve the ac-3 encoder is it possible to list some of the things you fixed with 4.0b?

the best movies have good trailers...(another LOTR plug)

my problems with the asio implementation are well documented in this forum and i would like to know what progress has been made to address this issue.

also since you guys (sofo) obviously don't own or have tested any of the FOUR DIFFERENT ASIO INTERFACES i have, how about you send me i copy of 4.0b for testing.

5.1 is really not that important to me, but ASIO is. my mom told me it never hurts to ask.

How about the vsti volume bug?

and oh i forgot to add this to the wish list: built-in denormalization against cpu spikes.

i'm sure 50% of the complaints about pops and cracks are due to this situation and by including it in acid pro you guys would have the first full app capable of handling this.

coolout - I'm not just rushing into defend SoFo here, but I should imagine that any Dm-Normalization problems are going to come from 3rd party plugins, as you have found out!

If you have a VST-wrapper installed (eg. FXPansion VST>DX or DirectiXer) you could try the Denormal Eliminator plugin found at Digital Fish Phones

I guess SoFo could code in a De-Normal switch into every channel that would do something similar to th Denormal Plug mentioned above...but that seems like a lot of work when most plugs don't suffer from this problem. I'm surprised that the Waves plugs suffer from it - is there an update? (not a Waves user myself).

Hey Sofo dudes - any hints as to what bug fixes/enhancements we'll see in 4.0b?

yes, i use the Denormal Eliminator from digital fish all the time. i get cpu spikes with alot of time-based effects, delays and such.

i compose, arrange, mix in acid about 80% of the time because it's just quicker. my projects are usually filled to the brim with about 40-50 tracks and about 3-5 busses.

the tune will just be playing great, but when the song breaks down to few tracks all of a sudden it starts sputtering and slowing down. then i have to find which of the 40 tracks or busses is causing the problem and put the denormal eliminator on it.

it's almost a blessing in disguise though because it's made me develope a consistent system of mixing in acid. eq and compressors on tracks, delays and exotic fx on the busses, and compressor/limiter/tube/analog tape/vinyl emulation on the master out.

all i have to do i make a track with some basic sound and insert the Denormal Eliminator, and sent it to all of the busses. Poof!!! the problems gone.

but it would be cool if acid had a global setting kinda like "quick fade edges"
that would take care of this problem.

That's an excellent way of using the Plugin! If I ever get a P4 I'll remember that trick!

In an ideal world, but I still think that it'd mean a lot of coding time spent on fixing problems that are caused by the plugin maker - who should themselves be responsible for fixing their own software. After all, if a plug suffers from the De-Normal issue then it will happen in any app that it is used in.

Come all you P4 owners, start emailing those plugin vendors! :)

What are you guys talking about? What is a "denormal eliminator"? It seems like you're talking about some way to get around the infamous P4 cpu spike thing that not everyone even admit exists. Tell me more!

Laurence -

If you follow the link to Digital Fish Phones there is a brief explanation of the problem and how the plugin 'fixes' it.

If you need a VST-DX adaptor to run the denormal plugin, you can download Spin Audio's free VST DX Wrapper Lite.
