In Acid 4.0, the buffer time effects the MIDI latency. Why is this? shouldn't latency be sperate from playback buffers? I have to turn the buffers down to match my latency, causing large files to play inccorectly, skips and pops.

If you're not able to play your midi controlled soft synth in real time without clicks and pops then you may not have a fast enough computer or the proper drivers for your soundcard. If you list your specs...CPU speed, soundcard, driver type and version, etc... someone may be able to help you. Have you tried using ASIO driver?

okay, computer specs:

AMD 1.4 Gigs
256 mb RAM
SoundBlaster Audigy Platinum card

I can't use my ASIO drivers because whenever i activate them it says: "ASIO does not support the current sample rate". I don't understand. Perhaps i need to get them working?

"ASIO does not support the current sample rate".

Try this: In Acid hit Alt+Enter, then click the Audio Tab, and select 48KHz, then click apply.

Yeah, with the Creative Labs stuff, you absolutely need to work at 48k to get any kind of low latency.

thats bazzare 48 k for low latency?

I dont understand the math. Is this true with other cards?

I think Laurence meant ASIO. For the Audigy, that means it MUST be set to 48KHz, since that is the default rate for the Audigy.

When you open Acid, the default audio properties are at 16 bit 44.1KHz, unless you change that to 48KHz and check the box "start all new projects with these settings".
So, if ASIO is selected, but the project prop's are set at 44.1KHz, there's usually an error message like the one SkipT mentioned.

The Audigy hardware does not physically support any sample rate other than 48 kHz. Anything that is played or recorded with an Audigy must be resampled to 48 kHz by Windows. The ASIO drivers only support the sample rate that the hardware supports, thus the need to set ACID to 48 kHz.
