I just got a Edirol UA-700 and I'm thrilled with it. Not only do the mic and guitar preamps sound great, but the USB drivers work extremely well. I'm getting rock solid performance at 17ms with negligable extra load on my CPU. The sound is just great. One thing that struck me right away is how good the headphone amp sounds. You can hear really clearly right down into tho low end without any artificial bass boost. It's exactly what I need: great guitar and vocal sound added to Acid! I tried it with Sonar, and the WDM driver isn't as spectacular as the ASIO one, but I like Acid a whole lot better anyway. This is the best soundcard for a singer/guitarist that I've ever seen! Nice unit. One thing I always suggest to users who want to use a USB interface is to make sure they dedicate one USB controller to the USB audio interface like this one to handle the 24-bit/96 kHz audio. Some systems come with at least 2 controllers that have 2 ports each (for a total of 4 USB ports); the USB audio interface should be on one controller while anything else can go on the other. That way no problems occur later on. Iacobus |

I plan to buy the Edirol UA-5. Does anyone know whether if offers the same audio quality as the UA-700 ? They both work with the native drivers of Win98SE, is that right ? |

I'm using it with Windows XP Home Edition. The UA-5 will not work with the native Windows 98 SE driver. Some Edirol interfaces work only with the native drivers, some work only with their own drivers, and some can be set to work either way. The Windows native drivers have improved much lately. They don't give you low latency, 96k or 24 bit, but they do give you rock solid CD quality audio with very low CPU overhead. The ASIO and WDM drivers give much lower latency and 96k and/or 24 bit audio with low CPU usage as well. On the UA-700 you also lose the MIDI interface when you use the generic Windows driver. The only negative thing I've noticed with the UA-700 is that I get a bit of staticy noise on my Fender Telecaster when I use it. The noise is just on that one guitar though. Four other guitars I've tried have no extra noise problem with this interface, and that guitar seems to be noise prone anyway. I'm about half way through sheilding the insides of the Tele with foil as suggested at http://www.guitarnuts.com. I'll post whether or not that helps here. Laurence Kingston |

Sheilding the guitar cut out the staticy noise quite well. I just ordered some Bill Lawrence pickups to get rid of the last little bit of hum. As I work with this interface I'm really quite impressed. It sounds as good as a Line 6 Pod, and the vocal preamp and processing sounds as good as the DBX or Beringer vocal processors. It's quite handy having all this stuff built into one unit. Laurence Kingston |

I just bought a Boss carrying bag for my UA-700. It fits perfectly. Now that I've had the UA-700 for a week or so, I must say that this is by far the best MIDI/audio interface out for a singer/guitarist. I absolutely love it! The editor is excellent and has it's own dedicated midi port. The sound is absolutely clean, and both the vocal and guitar processing sound wonderful. The drivers are rock solid. The ASIO performance is every bit as good as a PCI card audio interface! I can't say enough about this box! Especially for a laptop, this is the way to go!
