I usually use the Envelope tab under Process / Graphic EQ. This is only available in the full version of SoundForge, not the XP version. I set an envelope that was flat from 20 to 45Hz, dropped to -inf at 50Hz, then back to 0 at 55Hz, then flat to 20KHz. It didn't remove all the hum, but it did make it passable. Using a wider notch will remove more of the hum, but will also affect the music more too. |

I have seen a plugin (sorry, can't remember name) that is a very sharp filter at 50 or 60 Hz, and related harmonics. Sound like exactly what you need - now, just need to remember what it was called.... geoff |

Perfect job for the Sonic Foundry "Noise Reduction 2.0" plugin. |

I second Noise Reduction. 60 Hz cycle hum (I'm presuming that's what you're talking about) doesn't just spit out a 60 Hz sine wave. Rather, it's noise that is distributed all up and down the frequency spectrum, so using a notch filter will do little more than slightly improve the effect. Even then, you'll be messing with integrity of the recording. Noise Reduction takes a "fingerprint" of noise, and then cross-applies that fingerprint to your recording, thus removing only the noise with that specific signature. If you can get a 30 second sample of just the noise and nothing else, that will be more than sufficient to glean a "print" from. Regards, Nick |
