when it happened to me i had to copy the files to another drive, delete the originals>defrag, and replace them with the copies.

I get that too on one PC using XP's defragger. Never get that using Norton's speed disc defragger on the other PC.
One of these days I'm going to get "Perfect Disk" or another more popular defragger utility. Norton's ok, but I don't know if I can really recommend it.

When I get that message using XP's defragger, I just view the report. The report usually shows some very small amount of fragmentation, so I just ignore it.

If your having any prob's however, you may want to do what grooveworks suggests.

This brings up the question: does anybody have some recommendations for good defragging programs? Thanks!

I use Diskeeper from Executive Software very very good.....i used to use Norton SpeedDisk but after it did a number on one of my hard disks i ditched it(it corrupted the NTFS partition table)the drive was the drive i was using to store audio files..lucky enuff i had backups but i still managed to retrieve most of all my oddball files.. at any rate yeah "Diskeeper is a keeper"

Yes...!
I too lost a couple of precious video files using Norton. I had "stopped" the defrag due to it taking forever on a NTFS firewire drive, and the next thing ya know.....
I had files with zero bytes....just the file name.
Also, I have had folks tell me that they can not uninstall Norton Utilities 2002.
Well, I had picked up "No ton of Utilities" from newegg.com for $13....(now I know why it was so cheap), and also had trouble uninstalling it. This of course led up to eventually restoring a Ghost image. GHOST is the only thing worth using on the whole CD.

Diskeeper, that was the other one I was trying to think of!
