Subject:non-recovery of files after crash in 6.0d

two updates ago, we were told that the crash recovery bug in sf 6.0 (where you're unable to recover files after the program crashes) would be taken care of. apparently, this is still not the case.

again, sf (6.0d) crashed on me while scrolling horizontally through a file. upon restart, the program told me the files were recoverable. when I tried to recover them, poof--I'm told they were now unrecoverable. I lost an hour-long radio program that needs to be finished and on-air in two hours. I now have to rush to have the thing re-edited. I think I'll be using a different program to do so.

c'mon sf! when the @#$% will this be resolved???

It did rename and keep the temporary files it couldn't recover, though, right?

Remember that unlike 5.0 and before where we have an entire temporary file full of data just sitting there (which crash recovery just renames), 6.0 works on a series of pointers to different files and attempts to re-assemble the entire edit history from a media log and undo files. It is significantly more involved and a lot more can go wrong.

But I digress, it obviously still needs some work. I expect in future versions of Sound Forge, crash protection will be more like a regular behind-the-scenes project-style save and it will recover from that.

I'm a little more concerned that it crashed seemingly out of nowhere. Was there a dump?

J.

Maybe a behind the scenes "auto-save" option feature is in order, like in Vegas? Is this the type of thing you're referring too?

Yes, exactly, but saving the edit history as well as the current state.

I've had the same kind of grief. Coming back from a crash (all I do is convert from stereo to mono, and then after trying to normalize whatever I've recorded SF6.0d just unloads from memory). When I restart the program, it says I CAN recover...then when I do it says I CAN'T...even weirder...I CAN and the normalize is applied. THEN things get interesting when shortly thereafter, I'll get a low memory error, (even though it's only a 10MB file). Better yet...I have a P4 2.4GHz with a gig of DDR RAM.

This has been going on since I've gotten SF6...and none of the updates have fixed the issue.

If it doesn't happen soon...I'm going to have to switch to something else because it's hard to be productive in a radio environment when you FEAR doing any critical work on your workstation.
