Suggestions for Vegas 4.0

Trichome wrote on 7/8/2002, 7:05 PM
1. [audio] timestretching brought over from acid
2. [video] frame layer paint option broght over from Viscosity

the core technology is obviously there, it would be so much more convienent to operate those functions from within Vegas and not have to switch from program to program...

Gary,

Good suggestions. Sonic Foundry people do read these requests, but they are very busy and can't remember everything. I suggest you also formally submit your feature requests by clicking on this link:

an audio mixer [floating/skinable] mode would be nice for final mix down when tracking is complete

5.1 mastering support?

DVD menu creation tools? packed in w/ old CD arc. technology???

keyboard with video editing controls, audio mixer controls, flying faders....

I second the idea for a customized keyboard/command post.

a set of accousitc mirror amplifier sim files for DI instruments...

thx to seeker, and Sr_C for thoughtful comments...

Umm.. I am fairly shure that time streching? is in there already... If you hold down alt.. or shift.. dont remember right off.. you can change the lenght.. and it will adjust the vocals to keep the regular tonality. (there is an option for this in the properties of Vegas Video..

Hmmm. holding alt at end of audio event alows me to edit it from the front end...
shift seems to have no effect...

holding ctrl gives you a stretch but it drastically changes the tone and clarity of the event, whereas in ACID you can timestretch preserving pitch...
if there is something I am missing I would apprecitate the tip...
[preserve pitch while stretching audio events is checked and I can tell major difference between same file in both apps...]
Might be that Vegas allows a longer stretch? Can only preserve 'so' much of original pitch...

I think the manual says 20% is about the limit.

If you go to Options - > Preferences -> Editing (tab) there is an box you can tick there that says Preserve pitch when stretching audio events. check that.. it should make a difference.

ok, maybe I can explain what I mean this way...

Vegas manual CH.5 p. 137, 138 touches on this:
pitch shifting, time compressing/stretching events....
2 choices:
change pitch, preserve length
change length and pitch

ACID manual Ch. 4 p.123, 126:
stretch properties that contain key + tempo information that preserves the same tones of the file but plays them at variable tempos...

the tempo scrub feature works completely differently in the 2 apps.
In Acid, the tempo can change without changing the sound of the original too noticably...
in Vegas the scrub controller changes the pitch dramatically in comparison.

I hope this helps explain the feature that I am requesting, but not finding a way to accomodate...
Trichome wrote on 7/20/2002, 8:45 PM
I have mentioned that 'preserve pitch while stretching' was checked and there is still a different feature that acid does to an audio event.
Trichome wrote on 7/20/2002, 8:59 PM
scrub in Acid labled tempo
scrub in Vegas labled rate

also 'use original tempo' in track right click menu...

I understand the need for a rate scrub with the video, however a tempo adjustment scrub within Vegas or a toggle rate/tempo scrub might be convienent to more users than just me... dunno...
Chienworks wrote on 7/20/2002, 9:59 PM
Actually Vegas lets you independantly choose both preserve and change for both length and pitch. So when stretching/compressing, you may:

- change length / preserve pitch
- preserve length / change pitch
- change both length and pitch
- neither

it is the key and tempo data that allows for the added control.
maybe not everyone wants to do everything in 1 program....
I was just trying to help them come out with a complete solution...

I would like to see the Trimmer beefed up.. maybe even made into a separate 'sidecar' app the way VidCap is. Basically it could be a destructive editor for video files with the feature set of SoundForge.

I'd like to see the ability to save region files or embed them into video file headers.. and every day I wish for an 'Extract Regions' tool for video.
Trichome wrote on 7/30/2002, 6:46 PM
wow thanks for the help with that changes everything!!!
cheers

hows about some support for asio drivers for multitrack audio recording.
Chienworks wrote on 7/31/2002, 6:44 AM
You can accomplish a "save regions" for video with Vegas 3. Load the long clip onto the timeline, place splits instead of regions, then Save As with trimmed media into a new directory. Each split section will become a new .avi file. Unfortunately, they won't have sound as the audio portions will be saved in .w64 files. However, as long as you load the .w64 files onto the timeline with the .avi files you'll be fine (unless you didn't want the sound anyway, in which case ignore the .w64 files).

Live multi-channel input ability would be great!
4, 8, 16 track simultanious recording ability is a feature I would us daily.
[this is where a breakout fly fader mixing deck would be key.]
min 2 xlr connectors.

I do not know if this has been asked, or is even possibel, but being able to put marker down during capture like in Sound Forge would make my life easier. I capture live during lectures and talks and add the PowerPoint in after. If I had markers it would speed things up a great deal.

Add the ability to toggle on/off the Enable DV Device Control directly from the VidCap screens. When importing analog thru a DV device, you must turn off the device control. If you don't remember to change this, it can be a pain trying to figure out why you can't capture your analog source.

How about something similar to Sound Replacer that comes with Pro Tools? This is basically a feature that would trigger from drum sounds, for example and replace the sound with a sample of your choice for that track. I have various old projects with so-so drum sounds and would like to replace the kick\snare tracks with sampled ones. Doing this by hand is EXTREMELY tedious. I have seen this done with Sound Replacer and it appeared to work very well.

I have one (actually many but I will stick to one subject), rendering!

I would love two things
1. A render report that at least would simply say how long the render took. I often set a render going then go out or run it over night etc and have no idea how long it took.
2. I would love an option (check box) that once a render is finished it would shut your PC down. This way I can get a render happening overnight or during the day and forget about it. I travel a lot and often find it difficult to find time to render given the fact that I may not be back to turn off my machine.

I have one more.

I would like to see VV4 change it's priority under (NT, 2000, XP) to ‘HIGH’ when doing a Print-To-Tape!

I do this manually using the task manager every time I use Print-To-Tape, so why can’t the software do it for me.

Please, please, please
