When I installed my new Mia card, we were afraid to yank the SB Live! Value that was built into my Gateway because it had several cables running to different things (Ethernet card was one, I think). So I disabled the SB Live! card. Then I started having trouble with my output device defaulting to the Modem instead of the Mia--I'd have to change the routing for individual tracks because it wasn't picking up my outs from Preferences. I don't use the modem, since we're fortunate to be on satellite modem here on our little home network. So I disabled the modem. That SEEMED to clear things up, although now it seems to me that things are working a little more slowly than they were before. Maybe I'm just imagining things.... So the question is: When you disable something (WinXP), is it absolutely positively disabled, as if it's not physically installed anymore? Was this the safest thing for me to do, or is there something else I should have done? I really am scared to yank that wired SB Live! card. So is my partner, and he understands hardware a heck of a lot better than I do. Diane |

If you have no use for it yank the SB. there shouldn't be any wiring going to a NIC card, perhaps CDROM/DVD for audio, maybe even modem for voice modem but probably not a NIC. I personally yank anything and everything I don't use, I have DSL so there's no need for a 56k modem, as for onboard components, I disable them, and also check the box that says Donot map thru this device...Level Vibes |
