proper settings for true 24p

astral_supreme wrote on 11/10/2002, 8:05 AM
After researching the Panasonic ag dvx 100 I found that I can get true 24 frames into vegas after converting with a program called DVfilmaker.

After researching DVfilmaker I found brief instructions for settings and have listed them below for reference.

My question is : what settings do I use in vegas to do 24p widescreen?...I dont see the 23.976 as an option...and I want to do the sound in acid 4.0 so does Acid 4.0 have the 48048 sample rate needed?....If not does Vegas have this Sample rate....any help or tips is greatly appreciated.

Brief Instructions on dvfilm website:

To use the program, shoot with the DVX100 in Advanced 24P, or 2:3:3:2 pulldown mode. Capture through FIrewire to a Quicktime or AVI file. Open the raw footage with DVFilm Maker. Select processing options in the 24P Options popup. Make sure the "2:3:3:2 pulldown to 24P" or the "2:3:3:2 pulldown to 23.976P" options are selected. Start processing.

When processing is completed, exit DVFilm Maker and open the New Movie file with your editing program (vegas video of course). Make sure your timeline is set to 23.976 (aka 23.98) or 24 fps as appropriate. For 24 fps, the audio rate must be set to 48048." end quote

48048....uh in vegas how do you set the audio rate...I found the 24p button but wich template and pixel ratio do I use?

Finished product will be a true 24p widescreen dvd in dolby ac3 surround sound (acid4.0 and ac3plug in)
And finished product will be print to film destined for the movie theater and film festivals.

Thanks alot guys......ASTRAL

Hi Jeff,

There was a recent thread on this over at the COW:

You can change Vegas 3's frame rate to anything you like, not just the ones in the pop-up list. Just type in 23.976 for inverse telecined rate from NTSC. Note that the codec will have to allow it, and NTSC DV does not, because it's fixed at 29.97. Switch to uncompressed or another codec that allows any frame rate.

Thanks alot....can someone give a quick class on codecs......How to switch them...where to get them.....wich ones to map thru......Using windows 98se and I found a list of about 20 some codecs on my computer.

I hear so much talk about codecs.......but I am no pro and I am sure there are other people who wonder about them.

Is there any good forums that discuss them...?

One last question......everyone says they went to some place called "NAB" what does this mean...is it the name of a tradeshow or something?

THanks.

NAB = National Association of Broadcasters. They have a huge tradeshow that has everything you'd ever need for doing a show, and them some.

DVFilm Maker always outputs 24P with Quicktime, because Quicktime allows
any frame rate regardless of the codec used, including DV-NTSC.

Here are project settings I use with VV3:

Select File->Properties
Select Video tab
select all of text in template tab, enter 23.976P
set frame size 720 x 480
set field order to none (progressive)
set pixel aspect to 1.000
select all of text in frame rate window and type in 23.976
set rendering quality to Best
click OK

If you've done all of this correctly, underneath the preview window it will say Project 720x480x32, 23.98p

Note that the pixel aspect ratio is set to 1.00 instead of .909 (NTSC). It's not absolutely necessary to do this, but this allows you to bring in clips processed with DVFilm Maker without having to set the aspect ratio to .909 on each one. If Maker is used to convert the final cut back to an NTSC DV-AVI, the aspect ratio will be changed back to the correct value of .909 on the NTSC version. None of these changes actually cause any stretching or letterboxing of the image, it's just a bookkeeping thing.

24.000/48048 can also be used with VV3. The audio rate is set to 48048 by selecting all the text in the audio rate window and typing in 48048. The 24.000/48048 option in DVFilm Maker was created so that it would work with editors that cannot handle 23.976. VV3 can handle 23.976 correctly though, so 23.976P/48000 is preferred.

Other than the audio rate issue, what are the reasons someone would edit on a 23.976 (aka 23.98) as opposed to a 24 fps timeline? Does one or the other fare better for DVD transfers or film transfers? I guess 24fps would be easier for a film transfer, but I don't want to assume without asking.

EW...that answer is described in detail at www.dvfilm.com...dvfilmaker..panasonic ag dvx 100..in there they discuss the difference of the 24f vs the 23.976

Thanks alot for the settings mvb....I will give them a try.

I am very interested if acid 4.0 has the 48048 sample rate so I can master my sound over there. I also wonder if it will let me score 24p video?

Main goal is to get Ac3 surround sound out of acid for use with 24p film-look video.
