Subject:The Acid 4.0 Bugs ARE REAL!

I've been following this forum for quite some time, and I thought all of you were joking about the bugs in this resource-hungry behemoth known as Acid Pro 4. But, now that I've used it (or at least, TRIED to use it), all of the bugs I'm reading about DEFINITELY EXIST! I've experienced every flaw, bug and kink that I've read about and then some. Everything from freezes to app disappearing acts to automatic machine reboots without warning! I've yet to build a project in Acid Pro 4 from start to finish without a lockup! I've gotten no further than 10 tracks- midi, audio or otherwise. I've never spent so much money on a 'BETA', which is all this really is. And if you think my gripe is a joke check this out: I'm running Windows XP Professional with DUAL P3 1Ghz processors, 1 gig of ram, a 40gig hard drive, and a Soundblaster Audigy MP3 sound card (ASIO compliant-Wow!). And the only software installed on this thing is Acid Pro 3 and Acid Pro 4. Acid 3 is rock solid. No problem. Just the opposite of Acid Pro 4. It's not a matter of IF this app will crash, it's WHEN. Speaking of when, WHEN will the OFFICIAL release of Acid Pro 4 take place? To HELL with a service pack! Because from what I can see, I and everyone else who bought Acid Pro 4 just got screwed. Someone please wake me up when all this BETA testing is over, and the REAL ACID is released!

Welcome to the wonderful world of computers, Marcus.

Some things to try:

-Uninstall ACID 3.0 and keep ACID 4.0. Some users (for some inexplicable reason) experience more stable performance with ACID 4.0 when ACID 3.0 is uninstalled.

-Check out MusicXP.net. Lots of great tips there on using XP in a DAW situation.

-Ditch the Audigy. I'm serious. It just can't hold a candle to cards from Echo and M-Audio. The Audigy doesn't do true 24-bit/96 kHz (and neither will the Audigy 2 via ASIO for that matter); it does 16-bit/48 kHz internally. Ideally, you'll want to set your projects to this resolution and sample rate.

-Here's my setup, which is quite meager compared to yours (except for audio):

Intel PIII 800EB MHz
384 MB PC133 SDRAM
Windows XP Home SP1
ASUS CUSL2-C motherboard (Intel 815EP chipset)
ATI Radeon 32 MB DDR (AGP)
M-Audio Audiophile 2496 (w/beta Delta ASIO drivers)
M-Audio USB Duo
Yamaha CD-RW

I can play 25-30 track projects at 24-bit/96 kHz just fine. I don't use that much MIDI, mostly digital audio, but I've ran VSTi's just fine too.

There was an initial problem with ASIO, but that was a soundcard driver related problem, which M-Audio has fixed via beta drivers. Weren't there updated drivers released recently for the Audigy at Creative's Sound Blaster site? Have you tried those?

-You didn't mention whether or not you've tried updating all the drivers for the components in your system like your motherboard. It's important to be as thorough as possible.

-Remember this is a peer to peer support forum. SoFo reps do not have to respond here, but they do so anyway out of courtesy. Your first line of support should be here. Since your using a pro-level product, you're entitled to 60 days of free phone support following product registration. (The call itself is a toll call.)

HTH,
Iacobus

Definitely update your drivers, and then, money permitting, get rid of the Audigy.

Creative has never made an audio card that anyone serious about making music should use, in particular because of their drivers. They don't write them for music makers, and they don't test them for music makers.

In particual, the SB cards are problematic with a Dual CPU setup.

Thanks for the feedback! Since my last post, I did update all of my drivers, flashed to the latest BIOS version for my motherboard and obtain the latest version of Acid... 4.0b. Now my results are quite different. Everything is running way, way tighter now, although I still have that Audigy card. As soon as money permits, I will ditch that bad boy and step up to a pro-level audio card. I'm doing my homework and research on that now.

Thanks again for your feedback!

Groove.

Dinaosaur here as well...

PIII 850, 512RAM, Win 98SE, old "everything" (3 years). Running Acid 4b on a Delta 44 with no problems (except that plugin glitch with Sonar).
