I'm using an M-Audio USB Duo and don't have that problem. I can record 24-bit/96 kHz audio. Using version 1.26 of the Duo drivers in Windows XP Home (Service Pack 1) with ACID 4.0.

Do you have the latest drivers? Pick them up at M-Audio's Web site. (Be sure to follow the instructions with the drivers.) Also, have you tried both ASIO and WDM? The ASIO drivers seem a little spotty vs. WDM but they do work.

24 bit audio on a USB 1.x interface will usually limit your number of channels to less than 4 because of USB 1.x's limited bandwidth.

Hello,

My USBPre works in 24 bits and 48 kHz (Windows XP Pro) with my Smaarlive 5 (www.siasoft.com) and Nuendo (MME and Asio), but don't work with SF aplications. With my Mac laptop works too (24 bits).

Have you any explanation of this problem?

For your records, a bandwith graph:

It could be a question on how well-written the device's drivers are and how they work with different apps. Witness the "M-Audio Delta ASIO and ACID 4.0" issue (even though that wasn't USB-related), which M-Audio acknowledged was their fault and has since been fixed via beta drivers.

You need to add the latest service pack for Win2000.

There is a bug in the Win2000 Kmixer that will prevent 24 bit recording and playback is some instances as well as give problems with higher sample rates.

Been expirementing with this M-Audio Quattro (USB) over the weekend using the 1.26 and the 1.28(beta) drivers. Installed it on 2 different PC's running Win XP & Win XP Pro(SP-1 installed on both).
Selecting 24 bit in the Quattro ASIO ctrl panel does nothing but peg the record meters in AP4 into the red. Record or playback in AP4 is nothing but loud noise.
Had similar results with a Waveterminal 192M.

Is this ASIO 2/AP4/Win XP?
Where's this AP4b?

I'm using the 1.28 beta drivers for the USB Duo (which is also from M-Audio) and don't have problems recording in 24-bit. Tried both 44.1 kHz and 96 kHz. Both sample rates worked fine. (I'm using Windows XP Home SP1 and ASIO drivers.) Have you tried using WDM instead of ASIO? (I know that's lame but I'm trying to narrow down the problem.)

mD,
Yeah, it works great with the MME/WDM in AP4. It works great using ASIO @ 24/48 in Cubase SX demo.
No prob's with ASIO @ 16/44.1 in AP4. I'm using the latest beta drivers, which installed nicely! Just no ASIO 24 bit with AP4, but that's ok.....for now.
I love this thing! I needed the MIDI, and am taking advantage of the Direct Monitor feature(all 4 outs go out to my mixer). The DUO & Quattro are both nice USB devices. It was a tough choice between the 2. Returned the Midisport 2x2 to Guitar Center......for credit towards some headphones :-)

When thing you can try (if you haven't already) is to completely uninstall the drivers and then reinstall. (I always uninstall previous drivers before installing new or beta drivers as well; the 1.26 drivers had an uninstaller that would clean out any old drivers.)

Thanks mD, I'll keep trying different things from time to time. I'm no longer going to worry about it. It's just that if I DO want to use 24 bit AND take advantage of all 4 outs (I don't need any more than 2 in) then I NEED to use the ASIO drivers.
I'll take it to a friends house and see what it does there.
At least I've got 2 updates to look fwd. to: AP4b and the next M-Audio driver update.
I sent a report to M-Audio regarding the issue.

Hey maybe it's a USB 1.1 issue for me. Can't blame the chipsets. It does this on both PC's and one has AMD.....the other uses VIA chipsets. The only other thing the 2 have in common is: XP w/SP-1, previous SB Live/Audigy installs, and AMD CPU's.
Hmmmmm!

Do you guys record in 24 bit all the time?

Hey, these Sennheiser headphones sound awesome! I can finally block out all the noisy fans in the PC, and my cat doesn't go running out of the room when all the noise...err, I mean music starts up :-)

I do record in 24-bit, yes.

Now that I think about it, you may also want to try to place the Quattro on a USB controller all on its own. I happen to have two in my system and the Duo keeps one all to itself. (My USB mouse is on the other USB controller; they're also both USB 1.1.) If you don't have more than one USB controller, consider a card like this one.

Thanks!!!
This mobo has 3 usb host ctrlr's, but I only keep #3 enabled in the bios....and it's just for the Quattro.
#1 is for the usb ports mounted to the mobo header(under the ps2 ports), which I'll occasionally enable to use my scanner(no usb mouse or keybd here). The usb host ctrlr is also on it's own IRQ, as is my AGP and firewire card.

According to the M-Audio manual, they mention the possibility of improved performance by NOT using the usb ports mounted to the mobo header for audio, but insted use the addittional usb ports. So I hooked up the "add-on connector" to the mobo's #3. <Good point on keeping the mouse on a separate host ctrlr> btw!
Now the Quattro is the ONLY USB device even connected to the PC.....on it's own host ctrlr....it's own IRQ.
Freed up yet another IRQ the other day by disabling the Floopy Disk Ctrlr in the bios, along with the Parallel/COM 1&2/onboard joystick-MIDI.........the firewire card is the only PCI card installed. Running on 6 XP Services and only 2 items in my start up menu(programmable pointing device + MAUDIO tray).

I'm wondering if adding a USB 2.0 Ctrlr(PCI)card would have any benefit here???
They have those 1394/USB 2.0 combo cards.....?

Thanks mD!
