WMV export with XP SP1 not working

David Settlemoir wrote on 9/24/2002, 2:27 PM
I just built a new 2.53 GHz P4 system with VV3.0c and XP Pro SP1 for another company in town. When I try to export to a WMV file, it does not work and I get an error. There is nothing (completely blank) listed in the "Format" and "Attributes" drop downs in the custom settings. I also installed the Windows Media Encoder 9 beta to see if it would give the settings, it still did not. Quicktime and Real Media will encode properly. Everything is the same as my Athlon XP 1900+ system, except I haven't installed SP1 on the Athlon, and it works.

Is this a Windows XP issue or will there be an update to VV?

When I built the new P4 system, I did all the windows updates (including SP1) before installing VV. Thanks.

David,

If you do a search on XP, SP1 and WMV you will find that others have had this issue. It does appear to be a bug with SP1. You can salvage your OS load if you backed up the files during the SP1 update. You will then need to completely uninstall VV3 and reinstall that when SP1 is gone. If you did not do the backup files option, then you will need to reload from scratch.

I do not believe SF has a fix for this yet.

I doubt this will help narrow it down for you, but I have VV3.0c with XP(pro)sp1 and WM9b, and haven't had any problems, though the longest video I've encoded under WMV9b is about 6 minutes at 2.5MB/s. I have a Dell P4 1.8.

It did seem like Vegas became more sluggish after the upgrades to XPsp1 and WM9b, but I had no way to quantify any difference, so it may have been my imagination.

yes i can confirm it IS a bug:
Before Sp1 I use to have the format and attributes drop down box...after doing a clean format..install XP home..then Sp1...then WMP 9 and encoder 9...then VV3c...I can't tweak WMV or WMA file output from VV3c.
I tried to re-install VV3c to no avail...same problem persist.

So what should the people who have this problem do? Use XP without the SP1? wait for Microsoft to fix the problem (yeahhh riighhhttt) or does Sofo have a fix coming?

I think it's kind of serious if VV3c is not compatible with Sp1 and WM9.

Anyone know (SoFo) when this issue will be resolved???

Are you guys sure that there is not a workarround for this! ?
Like changing a registry setting or ini file in vegas!!
I really need and use vegas for wmv9 and as you all may know sp1 is very important for security issues as with my pc I am very often online.
Now the question is: Is it really only a microsoft bug! As for example in a simple little software like iuvcr all profiles from wmv9 are available!!!
I hope as a minimum respect to people who payed and bought vegas they will find a way to fix this as fast as possible!

We have been looking into this since it was first reported several weeks ago. Until today, we were not ever able to reproduce the problem here. We've also reported it to Microsoft, but they have not been able to reproduce it.

It appears that for some reason the codecs aren't getting registered, which is why the Format and Attributes dropdown are empty when you click Custom in the Render As dialog. This is also why you see that particular error code when you attempt to render (it corresponds to "audio codec not found").

Let me assure you that we are diligently working to resolve this issue.

I did a fresh install of XP Pro w/integrated SP1. Vegas 3.0c ran fine on my machine without SP1 installed.

I get the same errors the others have been having.

AMD 1.2ghz
756 megs RAM
G4 ti4200
SBlive
XP pro integrated SP1 (fresh install)

Hope that helps.

256 megs RAM
Geforce2 GTS
Sound Blaster 16
XP pro integrated SP1 (fresh install)(Spanish Version).

Same problems for me, except I upgraded to SP1 (and I installed VV after I upgraded)

P4 1.7GHz
640MB
SB Live
ATI RAGE 128 PRO II, 16MB

I hope SF finds a fix for this soon...

I had the same problem. I left SP1 installed and reinstalled Vegas 3.0c and the problem seemed to go away... Not sure if this will work for anyone else???
yirm wrote on 10/23/2002, 2:24 AM
The problem seems to happen on systems where Vegas is installed *after* Windows XP SP1. In other words, do a fresh install of XP SP1, and then install Vegas. Have you tried this scenario?

I've got the same problem. XP Home, SP1 integrated, P4 2.8. MPEGs and Real work ok, but I need to use WMV.

There is a fix for those that have been experiencing problems rendering to Windows Media formats (WMA or WMF) and are running on WindowsXP with SP1, download and run the following fix from Microsoft:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/winmediatech40/Update/8.20.00.5059/W982KMeXP/EN-US/wmfdist2.exe

Hi,

Just to share, the wmv is only a tip of the iceberg.

After the SP1 installation, my dual P3 is crawling 'like' a tortise.
There is something seriously flawed with the SP1.

Beware!
