win98SE clean install + sound forge 6

after installing SF6, when i right click on a media file (mp3, mpg, avi/divx), and choose PROPERTIES, it seems the computer scans the entire media file before displaying the properties window. with non-media files, there is no scanning ... the properties window displays immediately.

even after uninstalling SF6, the glitch remains. restoring a backup of the registry before SF6 was ever installed removes this problem.

Yes obs, I have noticed the same thing on my 98se system which is annoying. This didn't used to happen and I can't remember if it started with 6.0 or out of the blue. (no pun) However I think it's a Windows problem since it happens with or without SF open.

Does Sonic or anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

i tried SF6 on a different computer and the same thing ... but i backed up the registry so i'm covered : ).

grrr ... hate garbage software that messes up the registry ... and i thought netscape 7/mozilla 1 was bad with its html file association screw ups.

Sound Forge and other Sonic Foundry products do not directly modify anything related to how Windows displays the file properties. However, Sound Forge requires Windows Media Format 8.2 support, and the installer will configure the system for this if needed. This is done through the wmfdist2.exe file that is unpacked in the same location as the installer.

Reverting your registry to a pre-installed state is not advisable. While the WMF installer may have made registry changes causing the slowdown you see, it likely also made changes that ensures it functions correctly. Because wmfdist2.exe is a system file distributed by Microsoft, the Sound Forge uninstaller has no way to remove these files.

If you wish, you can manually install wmfdist2.exe to confirm that it is the source of your problem.

Thanks,
Dan

okay, i installed SF6 on a different computer and there was no problem with the file properties so it would seem it is a combination of SF/WMF and hardware.

the problem computer was an IBM thinkpad 600E (crystal soundfusion audio). i was able to replicate the problem on this computer so it wasn't just a fluke.
