I am using Sound Forge 6.0d on Windows XP .... I am editing MP3's and when I save the file I get the following 3 files for EACH MP3!! These files are HUGE too.

02 - Hook in Mouth (Instrumental).mp3 -> 3,471 KB
02 - Hook in Mouth (Instrumental).mp3.sfap0.sfk -> 38,251 KB
02 - Hook in Mouth (Instrumental).mp3.sfap0 -> 75 KB

Can I reconfigure the software to NOT create these unnecessary files?

Actually those files are quite necessary. SoundForge can't edit compressed files directly, so it creates an uncompressed version to work on. You can have SoundForge automatically delete this file when you close the editing window. Click on Options / Preferences / File, place a checkmark next to Delete temporary files on close. Keep in mind that if you do this, then SoundForge will have to recreate these files the next time you open up the mp3 file again.
