Subject:No File Open Dialog in SF5.0F?

This may become moot when I get around to installing 6.0, however, I really prefer it when things are working right. I recently downloaded 5.0f and now I can't open files - no dialog box comes up (I can, however, drag files to open them with no problem). I uninstalled and reinstalled the original 5.0 and it worked fine; then I did the upgrade to 5.0f again - and again no file open dialog. Anyone know what this might be?

How long are you waiting for the dialog box to appear? I've noticed that with the later versions of SF5, there must be some extra stuff going on before it displays the box. I've seen the hard drive run for 30 seconds or more before the box appears. It's almost like it's scanning my entire directory tree first. It was very confusing for a while, but now i've learned to expect it. I haven't learned to enjoy it yet though ... ;)

Thanks for the reply. I haven't timed it but I'm waiting "a while." There is brief activity across the disks and then nothing. I can then go on and do something else as if the open request had never been made. As I mentioned before, this has only been happening since I applied the 5.0f update.

This is a known bug in Sound Forge 5.0f. If you do not have QuickTime installed on your system, or it is installed but authoring components are not installed, then this is likely the cause of your problem.

As a workaround, do one of the following:

1. Download QuickTime from the Apple web site and install it with the authoring components. You'll need to do a custom install in order to select the authoring components.

or,
2. If you absolutely do not ever want to use QuickTime, then unregister qt4plug.dll by dragging and dropping it in Sound Forge (click No when prompted). In a typical installation this file will be in C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\Shared Plug-Ins\File Formats. You'll need to restart Forge, then you should now see the file open dialog when you try to bring it up.

I have the same problem described, but with the 6.0a (Build 150) demo/trial. I installed the program last night, and no file open dialog box appears - the program hangs, and I have to end task using task manager (indicates "not responding"). It starts up fine and I can drag an audio file from Windows Explorer into SoundForge and it appears to work fine, but not with File>Open. I have VV 3.0c and VF 2.0c installed and they each work well, but I really want to try SoundForge.

System: Dell P3-600, 384MB RAM, 30GB system drive, 40GB media drive, W98SE

I tried uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling, rebooting again, etc - no luck. Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Frenchy

Do both of these things:

1. Install QuickTime 5.02 or greater, including the authoring components -- download from www.apple.com/quicktime/
2. Install Sound Forge 6.0d, it's the most recent update available on our web site.

Please contact Customer Support if you still can't get it running after you've done that. It's likely that there are hardware issues causing your difficulties.

I have the same problem, and I will try the fix. I never had this problem until I got windows XP, but I had Quicktime installed on it. So thanks for posting!
