Subject:Will the new Surround Plug-in Pack solve my problem?

Re: incompatabilities mentioned in Acid Knowledge Base item #'s 1608 & 1616, I have a soundcard that is capable of sending AC-3 data out via SPDIF. I thought this meant that I had a "5.1 compatible sound card" (Page 148 of Acid 4 manual) so I went out and bought a digital surround receiver capable of decoding AC-3 on incoming SPDIF line. Now, I find that this will not work with Acid 4 as is because when in the 5.1 environment in Acid, nothing is being sent out as AC-3 data.

My main question is this: Will the new Surround Plug-in Pack that is coming out in early November solve this problem and allow me to MONITOR my surround mixes in real time via the SPDIF port ("live" AC-3 data flow) or not? I know that it will allow me to encode into the AC-3 format for burning, etc. but I am wondering if this surround system I just bought is useless for monitoring?

Thank you in advance for any help in this matter,

Brad

I'm having the same issue with my on-board C-Media and or Exitgy opening up the extra channels to Acid Pro4 for 5.1 output to a receiver.

ACID 4.0 does not encode AC-3 on the fly and play it back through a digital output for decoding and monitoring as you work.

To do surround mixing in ACID, you need a soundcard with 6 discrete outputs available, one for each surround channel, and one for the LFE. These outputs must then be routed/amped/whatever-you-like to get to your surround speakers so you can listen while you mix.

The Surround Plug-in Pack will not change this. It will simply allow you to render to AC-3 when you are finished.

Well, that is bad news - but thanks for responding so quickly Nate.
