Subject:M-Audio Audiophile 2496...Good Card?

Is the Audiophile 2496 worth it? I was wondering if anybody here has had any experience/problems with it. Has it been used with Acid Pro 4? I'm running Win 98 SE. If anybody has an info, that'd be great.

It is a very good card. It worked great for me under Win 98 SE. I did upgrade to Windows XP before picking up ACID 4.0 though...

Since the Audiophile is a Delta series card, you may have an initial problem with ACID 4.0 using ASIO. (It's a Delta ASIO driver issue.) Not everyone is having the problem, and just about everyone can use WDM just fine.

M-Audio's had beta drivers up for a little bit now that can fix the issue, but seems to be only for Windows 2000 and Windows XP users. If I may make a recommendation, and you have a fast enough system to handle it, upgrade to either OS. Performance is a lot better with the NT-based OS's.

Thanks for the info. I'm ditiching the Audigy card since it's just not acting very stable on my system. The ASIO driver is giving me problems too. As far as using VSTi's the Audigy hasn't been a problem but on playback, it's a mess.

Do you think I'll have an issue with the ASIO drivers under Win 98 SE?

Now that you mention it, I really don't know. I do notice that those who are using ACID 4.0, an Audiophile and Win 98 SE aren't having problems as their XP brethren are.

Can anyone who is using an Audiophile, Win 98 SE and ACID 4.0 comment?

Sorry about such a late reply, but I have been using the M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 with 98se and I have been experiencing some trouble. First off the latency is terrible and as M Audio is not supporting ASIO for 98se this makes using the midi element in Acid almost useless. Also, I get a lot more crackle than I would like, but it varies from project to project. At this point I am SERIOUSLY considering replacing my mobo and processor(Athlon700 w/ Epox mobo) b/c according to M AUDIO there is an issue with the Via chipset which I have and I might as well get more speed while I'm at it!!!!! But when it works it sounds great!

I have read a lot of stuff here that XP is the way to go and since I plunked down the $$$$ for the Audiophile card I am considering taking a chance on this upgrade as well so that I can get better drivers. I am sold on the SOFO/ACID family and I want to do whatever I can to get my system at pro level using these products! Not only are they relatively easy to use, but they have a much more "airy" and transparent sound quality than other programs I have used Cakewalk, Cubase,PT blah, blah, blah. Any how, as for the Audiophile card it self, it does sound nice and smooth and full and you can definitely hear a difference especialy when applying FX. So I would say get it and damn the torpedos. It still sounds better than the SB Live stuff! Good Luck, Luces.

check out the waveterminal 192m soundcard from egosystems.

There is a earlier post that asks: just how good are the audigy cards" and in this post they tell about the waveterminal.

This is a really stupid question, I know, but I am thoroughly bewildered by the ins and outs of the soundcards out there. I've read the thread on the Audigy and its betters, so the advice to ditch the Athlon motherboard will probably be followed before I buy anything.

What I want to know is this:

I don't have to route any external gear into this card. Not even a keyboard. I'm doing everything strictly within the system...although I've run into the whole virtual midi in/out thing and want to be sure I'm covered for that kind of thing once I figure out how it all works. I want to use soundfonts, too, but through .sf2-compatible synths.

Assuming I want a great soundcard for my purposes, but don't want to pay for things I'm not going to use, what features do I NOT have to concern myself with?

Probably the most obvious one I can think of is a card with multiple inputs and outputs (which is usually through a breakout cable or rack).
