Thank you for all your replies. Would anyone know if the M Audio 2496 card would do the trick for me? It has Midi I/O with digital and analog I/O. It runs about $179.00.
I also found version Acid 3.0 for about the same price. Besides the midi cables and the computer, is there anything else I would need? I run a Mackie D8B with a Mackie HDR 2496

Hey Jeff,

I used to be just like you...drum machines ruled...until I found Acid. Kiss your machine goodbye. This program simply kills all drum machines with a little TLC. Since it uses loops of any kind (drums, of course for your use would be best), you automatically gain the timbre of acoustic drums just by plugging in the right loops. Tempo, key changes, razor sharp editing...it's all here, my friend.

As far as a setup goes...a good soundcard is a must. Not a SoundBlaster or anything like that. If you are serious about this, spend enough to get into an M-Audio or Echo or something along those lines. Search these forums for guidelines on a good card. I am using a M-Audio Delta 66 and it has been completely troublefree. I would say at least a 1GHZ PC (which is really old by today's standard's) with Windows XP...256-512 MB of RAM and the usual tweaks and you should be rocking fairly quick. Acid 3.0 was/still is your best bet at this point. I am not sure if you can still get it or not. Acid 4.0 is rife with bugs and problems as of this writing. Hopefully the next update will sort this out.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Cuzin B

I was in your position with the triton and drum machines... I upgraded to a nice beefy home brewed pc and acid 3.0. My life became a whole lot better. I started finishing songs, loops, beats in half the time.
One draw back.... I bought the soundblaster audigy plat. ex. I am unable to record at 24-bit level. Not sure if there is a fix. Bummer !!!
I recently upgraded to 4.0.... Love the crash recovery !!!

If yu can use the MIDI interface in Acid or use another program with Acid t edit MIDI files, I suggest you look at something like FXPansion's DR-008. It is a drum sampler of sorts. It works great as a drum machine for your sounds.

I personally do not suffer issues with Acid 4.0a. No crashes or bugs to speak of for what I've done.

Hello Jeffrey,

Go ahead and spring for the M-Audio Audiophile 2496. I have one and love it.

OMG, those Mackie goodies...schweet! :o)

Remember that ACID Pro 3.0's MIDI capabilities are fairly limited compared to ACID Pro 4.0's. You can only record, add and playback basic MIDI tracks in 3.0 and run them through DLS synths. You can run MIDI tracks through a VSTi (far more flexible, IMO) in 4.0. But both have the same MIDI sync capability.

HTH,
Iacobus
