Subject:VSTi volume during recording

I'm using Acid4.0a on a win98se, audigy, 2ghz, 256mb ram, p4 machine.
My problem is that when i'm recording i can't hear my vstis and anything that i'm playing on my midi keyboard. The vsti plays loudly when there are no other tracks playing be they audio or midi, but there is a serious volume reduction as soon as i press record.
Admittedly i'm a cheapskate and am only using free vstis (i don't onw any others...) but the fact that they play fine on their own suggests an acid 4.0 issue. Also this is not a problem on Cubasis2.0 using the same plugins.
I suppose i could reduce the volumes of all my other tracks but this isn't really feasible.
Am i missing something?

ps the advice in these forums really got acid 4.0a up and running for me so cheers!
