Subject:'No Soft Synth Selected'

Pardon me if I'm just not seeing something obvious here..

I used to be able to see properties on VSTi's that I had loaded, in the 'Soft Synth Properties' view. Now, all I see is 'No Soft Synth Selected'. Sometimes if I have the DLS Soft Synth loaded, I'll see the properties on that, but never on anything else.

Hints? Tips? Random walrus humor?

Uninstalling Acid3 and Acid 4, then reinstalling Acid4 seemed to work. I wonder what happened?

It does seem to help just having only 4.0a installed on its own. When I had both 3.0g+4.0 it was a nightmare. Don't know why. Now the only problem I'm running into is snaps/crackles[?] from my speakers when I try adding a effect to a track/buss/busstrack. Only for realtime tweaks though. FX automation is smooth...no problems[knock on wood]. The snaps and such are low mostly not loud. Weird. Later.

Ok! So the problem is back. 'No Soft Synth Selected' continues to plague me when I try to switch VSTi's. I'm convinced this is a bug - it works one way after installation, then stops working after I close/reopen it (however if I save and reopen Acid4, the correct VSTi will show)

Other bugs: Fruity loops starts on the 3rd beat if the Offset is greater than or equal to -3. Any value lower than that addes 1 beat per. Also Fruity always plays the "Record on Precount" metronome regardless of setting - this could be an FL bug.

Neo,

You must first double-click the little pink square on the soft-synth bus for the properties to come up and display a synth (or right click and select properties). Otherwise, the properties window has no clue as to what synth to give the window focus to.

Little pink square? You mean in the top-left corner of the 'Soft Synth Properties' window (has a few keyboard keys and a '1')? Double-clicking does nothing. Right-clicking does not bring up a menu.

The same icon is on the Soft Synth 'bus' in the Mixer. Double-clicking it there will bring up the proper Synth Properties window everytime.

Ah, that seemed to work. Maybe selecting a track with a VSTi attached should bring up that VSTi (like the way the Track Properties window acts)... But thanks for the tip.

Oh yeah - and now after adding my 3rd synth (NI Battery) when I close Acid4 I get: "The instruction at "0x053c3000" refereced memory at "0x058c17d8". The memory could not be "read"."
then 0x059605e4, 0x05977fd4, another instruction trying to read 7fd4, 6753 trying to read 0cc8, and finally a runtime error 216 at 00046753.
If I remove the track with NI Battery attached to it, the problem goes away (yes, Battery works in all other VST apps)

I'm positive that Battery works in ACID, I have been using it to test since day one. Do you have the latest update? Is it a demo?

Please, let me know.

I'm using NI Battery 1.0.1.4 full version. I just tried un/reinstalling - no difference. Battery works fine in Acid4 for me, but I get those errors when I close it.

Also, if I have the Soft Synth window docked and about 1/4 the size of the whole Battery window, then I view a VSTi like Crystal ( http://www.greenoak.com/crystal/ ) the graphics seem sort of clipped (scrolling around shows exactly what is missing). When I switch back to Battery the same problem stays.

Neo,

The clipping problem is just a redraw issue. Resize the window or double-click its top bar (form bar, tool bar, whatever that thing is called) to resolve it. Also, concerning the bad read problem... I had a similar problem when I first got my system as a hand-me-down from a programmer friend who had put the machine through hell as far as installing/uninstalling/hacking the registry went. A reformat fixed it, although I'm not sure what exactly caused it. If I had to guess, I'd imagine it's an issue of data going from the hard-disk to physical memory and not functioning properly with a certain file, although I can't know that for sure because I'm no programmer. Perhaps check your disk for errors and see if something comes up. Also perhaps try to load Optimal settings in you BIOS.

Regards,
Nick

Sure, a reinstall might change things, but there's nothing particularly wrong with mine as-is. I have seen errors like that on fubar windows systems, but this is the only situation under which this problem occurs.
And still, the redraw problem is a bug.

It's actually a bug with the VSTi standard itself, not Acid (the GUI, from what I've read). Perhaps when the standard is updated, it will go away.

Did you scan your disks for errors to see if that was the problem with the read error?

Hi NeoAlus
The Crystal VSTi was the only soft synth that seemed a little flakey out of the almost 20 or so VSTi that I own. I e-mail the guy and he told me that he just posted a new updated version, I installed the newer version it still seemed to work off and on I just un-installed it. I was running it on Win2k P4 1.7

BTW Acid 4.0 users, A good place to check out VSTi's is at
http://www.kvr-vst.com/index.php

You can even download bank/patches and free/demo VSTi

Neo,

Honestly, I cannot guess what the trouble might be with Battery. I have used it heavily under 98SE, ME, 2000, and XP on 3 different machines and haven't had a single problem with it.

If I email you, could you send me an ACD-ZIP of the project that is causing this (and your drum kit)?
