Subject:Volume of SoftSynth channels with Acid 4.0a

Okay - after much thought - I decided to go for the Beta Delta driver for my Delta 66 in a non-production environment with Acid 4.0a. So far - so good....no weirdness yet but has anyone experienced low levels on their softsynth channels? I am currently using Native Instruments FM7 and SampleTank with Sonic Synth....if I lay down a loop on track one and then slip one of these guys on Track 2, the volume of the soft synth really pales in comparison with the loop. Any tips for better volume besides driving the fader thru the roof?

I apologize if this one has been raised before but I couldn't see it on the post list.

Cheers,

Cuzin B

CuzinB,

From my experience, the FM7's volume usually defaults to 50% (64), so going into the Master config page on the FM7 and bumping this up can help. In addition, you could just insert a Main Volume MSB Control Change event at the beginning of your track for an easy way to edit the overall volume of the FM7 whenever you like.

Actually, I've found DR-008 to be way loud. Hopefully, it's what Nate suggested (he tends to be right, a lot).

TeeCee,

The DR-008 does generally have higher output than a lot of synths (personally, this is great for hard electro tracks <g>), but there is really no standard on how "loud" a VST instrument should be by default. Some default their volumes to 64, some to 127, some in between... It's usually a combination of setting the volume within the synth itself, and small adjustments at the mixer level that will give you what you are looking for.

SonicNate,

Thanks! I will check this out ASAP. Have you guys noticed any other VSTi's that come up low by default in your testing etc....?

I'm still having trouble with volume changes with vsti's. No matter what changes I make to track volume, Synth volume, mixer volume etc, every thing resets at play from start. In the 'Insert MIDI Event' box it lists..CC number and CC value. Under value, what do I enter for a volume reduction of -16db. In other words, how does 'value' relate to db increments? Every time I change it, it results in a program freeze.

migaloo,

MIDI volume is denoted on a linear scale from 0 to 127, so you may have to "guesstimate" the value that you want at first. Also, all synths will differ in their output levels, so there is no standard scale that you can refer to.

For example, you might try inserting a:

Control Change : Main Volume MSB : 96

or, CC number 7 with a value of 96.

Hope this helps,

Nate
