I am always stuck on the 'piano 1' patch 1 when using the dls soft synth. I can't find where to change to honky tonk piano, for instance. s |

This has been posted on a few times. Try a search. If you can't find it, I'll retype what I've typed when I have time. Or someone else may answer this in the mean time. TeeCee |

I know how to change the patch names in the Event List Editor, but how do we access the drum sounds. I'm not having any luck with these? Thanks, Dave |

Dave, You must have the MIDI track you are using set to channel 10 before the drum patches will become available. Also, make sure you are creating the proper patch change, try this: 1) Add your DLS Synth and a MIDI track 2) Get properties on the MIDI track, under the general tab, set it to channel 10 3) Go to the List Editor tab Now, supposed we want to access the Elec. Perc. patch, which in the DLS Soft Synth properties page, is listed as Patch #: 118, Bank MSB: 9, Bank LSB: 0 In the List Editor, at the beginning of our track, we insert a patch change with that exact info. Now, whatever you create in that track will use the Elec. Perc. patch. You can follow these same steps, but with different patch info to access the other drum kits in the DLS synth. Hope this helps, Nate |

One thing, though...in 4.0, the DLS Synth was not picking up on my patch changes and was giving me piano for the first time playing through a loop, and it wasn't rendering out using the correct instrument. 4.0a seemed to fix the DLS soft synth problem, but it introduced others with other VST instruments, so I went back to 4.0 after I'd rendered out what I had to have through the DLS in 4.0a. So if you do it right, and it's still not working, consider this may be part of the problem. |

What's the trouble you are having with VST instruments in 4.0a? |

4.0a VST instrument problems: Won't render, won't play, tunings wandering off (sorry, don't remember which, but it had to be either Ganymed, Vivaldi, Cheese Machine, and/or DSL Soft Synth). Also a preponderence of crashes I didn't have before. I've had 4.0a off my system for about a week, but now that I'm finished with what I was working on, I'll put it back on and see if I can get the problems to repeat. It would be lovely if I could have the experience of 4.0a being more solid than 4.0, as some have mentioned in this forum. The wrong-patch-reading problem with the DLS Soft Synth is absolutely and constantly repeatable for me in 4.0. I know SOFO knew about this and fixed it in 4.0a. But I don't just use that synth; in fact, use it rarely. I've got a Gateway AMD Athlon 1000, 512k RAM, running XP Pro. |

Nate, Thanks for the response, but I meant I couldn't access the drum kits listed at the bottom of the soft synth patch list. (I should have been more specific before, sorry.) I can get all the other sounds to work fine, but the drum kits never show up. They have the same patch numbers as some other sounds and the other sounds always come up. I can't figure out how to get Acid to somehow ignore the other sounds and play the kits. Any ideas? Thanks, Dave |

Dave, Nate's the man. What he says is usually golden. Did you select MIDI channel 10? MIDI channel 10 is the General MIDI drum channel. A drum channel is required for many synths to play back drums. A drum patch is made up of many, many samples, usually one per key, where as a typical instrument is made up of much fewer samples spread across the keyboard, pitched appropriately. So, select MIDI channel 10 to tell the DLS synth that you want a drum patch, not a regular instrument and then set your patch change to select the drum patch you want. Some strict GM implementations ignore patch changes when on the drum channel and play back only the one included drum patch. Lucky for you, the DLS synth includes several drum patches. And you can make your own with third party editors. TeeCee |
