hello Sound forge developers.
I'm very much into converting my old LP's into CD's. the noise level between songs however, makes the auto region tool unusable for me. it does however work fine with clean recordings, with a clear silence between the tracks. not everybody can afford the very good ,but expensive Noise reduction 2.0a for creating silent pauses between songs.
1. perhaps some tweaking with the minimum level control can fix that ?

2. replace the % in minimum level control with the more commonly scale in dB. that's what's shown in the playback meters.

3. minimum beat duration should go to at least 10 sec, to prevent auto region from splitting up songs at every soft level part.

keep up the good work people !

I'm not a SF developer, just a faithful user like yourself. I too am into restoring stacks of vinyl, in my case, the heritage of a religious organization. I have done piles of vinyl, and will offer some insight I have found in the process.

First, clean the records. The cleaner you get them before recording them the better your end result will be. I use a 50-50 solution of denatured alcohol and distilled water, with just a touch of ivory dishwashing soap in a spray bottle. I spray one side, gently use my fingers to distribute the solution into the groves of the record. I will let it sit, and sprits it four or five times over the next hour. Then I rinse it in pure water and dry with a fan. You will be amazed what this will do for your final quality.

I do have the NR package, and will use the Vinyl restoration tools in it to clean up the recordings. This tool alone is more than worth all the money I have invested in SF products. I've tried others, and nothing is in its league. I'll post a side by side with Cakewalk's product in another post later.

A trick I have learned with really noisy vinyl. You can DELETE some pops if they are bad enough and short enough (many times they are). Zoom in on the pop itself, and select just enough to get the pop. Use SF to automatically select at zero crossings, because if you don't, you will create a new pop. Once you get the smallest selection possible, delete the pop. Then listen. Usually the removed pop will be so small that the deletion will not be audible, but the pop will be gone.

Next, I use the Auto Trim/Crop instead of auto region. To me, it is much easier to adjust to do the job. It can be set to totally remove silence between the tracks, which is what I do. I then normalize each track and export regions. Then burn to CD with Nero. The end results have been nothing short of amazing.
