..to hear about this incompatability with M-Audio soundcards and Acid 4...that's a major slam, especially with me stickin w/98SE for the rest of my life, and that's for sure...XP messed my world up for 2 months...never, never again...

Sooner or later, you're going to have to face the fact that information technology is in a constant flux, which means that Win 98SE is right now an endangered species ready to go extinct as far as operating systems go. It's already starting to disappear from the specifications and requirements lists of vendors along with Windows Me. (And rightfully so. The only way we can move forward is if the technology evolves for the sake of more power. Win 98SE and Me just don't have that power.)

What you're asking is tantamount to holding back progress. (I don't mean that to sound offensive.) I know Windows XP isn't perfect (Is anything ever?) but it's certainly a step in the right direction.

Why can't they come out with a 98 third edition then..XP just tore me up...some wounds take a LONG time to heal..I'm lookin at the OS after XP, cuz this one just isn't it for me..,what a mess..! and even for the local techs as well...!

If Microsoft came out with a third edition of Win 98, wouldn't that mean they'd still be using older technology? It'd basically be a waste, especially when they can put those resources towards the future rather than the past. I have to say that performance-wise, Win 98 eats XP's dust.

Do you have a relatively new computer (around a year or two)? Windows XP was basically made for newer computers in mind, which is why I would recommend anyone that's considering Windows XP to also seriously look over their system's age. If the system is a little long in the tooth, definitely get a new system along with Windows XP. You'd be much happier in the end.

While it will work on an older system (I have it going on a PII 300 MHz, 256 MB system just fine), it's best on a faster system.

stusy,

What happened with you and XP? I have had it installed on every box in my studio (since the Release Candidate stage in Summer 2001) and I can't ever recall having an issue of any kind. Could it be your hardware or something else that is the problem? XP is as rock solid as it gets for recording right now.

Update when you can.

As for the compatability issue between Acid 4 & M Audio...

I'm on a custom-built, PIII 850, Win 98SE system with a Delta 44 and Acid 4 runs just fine.

As for the above-mentioned plugs for XP...I looked into upgrading, but decided to wait until I get a new box. This machine I have is very well tuned, and it will be a great backup/rendering box when I get a new one -- with XP on it. Iacobus is right -- XP is more stable & geared toward what we are doing with our machines...but that list of "possible conflicts" is pretty daunting. I plan to start fresh -- but with a backup that's ready to stand in if I have any problems.

What M-Audio incompatability? I've never heard of any. I'm using the Delta 410 on my 2nd DAW ( I use 1 DAW strictly for audio, MOTU powered, and the 2nd machine for MIDI), and have never had any difficulties. ACID PRO has been on this particular machine since version 2.0, along with Sound Forge, Reason, and now Cubase SX as the #2 computer in a System Link configuration. M-Audio makes solid products, with great driver support. Anyone having problems getting ACID to run or install should contact M-Audio tech support and work out the glitch in their system.....

M-Audio has a Beta 4.0 driver update and fix, try it. It works great for me...http://www.midiman.net/support/driversearch.php
