Subject:Acid Pro 4.0 Crashes hard (Help!)
Posted by: Jayson

I've used many products in the past and now I use Sonar to do my work. I have a producer friend who swears by Acid Pro 3.0. I like the latest things so I came to this site to find out what was new with Acid Pro. When I saw the freatures in Acid Pro 4.0 I was hooked. I downloaded the demo and installed. I tried first to load some break beat I've been using in my other projects. It loads find, converts the tempo, and looks ready to play. When I hit play, an error message box pops up and says, "an error has acurred during the following operation". To continue I must hit ok and there is a detail box. I get the same message when I try to run the demo song (hybid1) too. The program exits when I click ok. I wrote Sound Foundry and told them of this problem and they wrote me back with this e-mail:

Thank you for the email. On the system you are running, do you have
the latest 4 in 1 driver from VIA installed? Also, when was the last time
you had updated your Turtle Beach sound card. If you have the capability,
we would suggest running the latest updated ASIO drivers from this
manufacturer's website.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del at the same time and you will see a list of the
programs currently running on your system. You would only need two of these
items to keep your computer up and running. These would be Explorer and
Systray. You could End Task on everything else in this list. Some things
may be stubborn, and you may have to close out of them two or three times
before you are able to get rid of it. ***Be careful when you are closing
out of these tasks that you DO NOT press Ctrl+Alt+Del two times in a row as
it would cause your system to Restart and start this process over.

***Please include any previous strings with regards to this email when
replying for further assistance***

If you have any further questions please feel free reply to this email or to

(end of email message)

I always find it funny when companies think you don't know your system. I'm going to describe my system again for everyone here and show to SF that the problem is with them and not me.

Here's my system:

SpaceWalker Shuttle Hot-591P Motherboard (w/ the lastest Via 4 and 1 Drivers and BIOS upgrade)

AMD K6-III 550MHZ CPU (Fast CPU that out performs Intel's crap)

256MB PC100 SDRAM (Micronic name brand)

Maxtor ATA-100 Hard drive controller w/ all Maxtor 7200 RPM Drives

Windows ME with all updated drivers and fixes

Nvidia GeForce2 MX400 32MB Video Card

ASIO 2.0

Turtle Beach Montego II Quadzilla Sound Card (lastest drives from turtle beach)

...now I have no software loading up when my system starts up but systray and explorer. My system resources are at 98% free on start up. I have tweaked my registry to it's optimal performance. I've gotten ritten all the junk I don't use and need on my system. My machine cooks and has never had a problem with any software in the past other than minor bugs in the developers code. And even then, I have help solve many problems with software. I am a Beta test for AOL DSL high speed service. I've beta tested for Microsoft's Windows in the past. I feel that SF may have attempt to rewrite there code to gain performance, improve speed and add newer features for the 4.0 version. But everyone here in this forum knows there is a problem with 4.0. I'd like to offer my services for free to beta test the next revision. Only when the software works I would buy it. I'm not going to buy a piece of software I can't use. So for now I'll stick to Sonar which has never locked up or crashed on me as long as I don't go beyond my systems resouces and memory. Here's the error message I get when I hit the details button. Anyone else get this message. And what does it all mean.

I've gotten almost the exact same thing happening to me when I try to load Acid 3.0 projects into 4.0. Something wiggy is definitely going on. Lemme know if you hear anything else from the Sonic Foundry boys.

I don't know if your 3.0 projects have a MIDI track in them, but if they do maybe this will help. Load the project in 3.0. Go to the MIDI track and right click, then click on properties. Next click on the disk icon. Save the project and then open it in 4.0. Got that tip from Sonic Foundry and it's a known bug. Good luck.

I don't have any 3.0 projects for this is the first time I'm trying to use Acid Pro. I here alot of good things about Acid 3.0 so I thought I'd give it a try before I kick out $300. This does not sound like a solid program. What ever changes SF made from 3.0 to 4.0 does not work. If you do a search in the forum section you'll see alot of troubled users with all kinds of problems. That's not good. I think I may wait for 5.0 before I decide to buy any SF product. Where was the beta testing. Why wasn't it tested. Why release a product with all these problems. Poor choice made by SF. Here's something else, I also get this error message sometimes when I press the play button after I load the demo. Does anyone know what it means...plus the mixer window with the sliders in it has disappeared and is displaying a messy picture.

Have you tried updating your video card drivers and/or turning video acceleration down all the way? Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the ACID demo as well?

HTH,
Iacobus
